Player of the Week: Josh Broadwater (H2OKLAN)

If we were to say player 1849 was the “beauty” of Munzee in California, then this player would be the “brawn”! This week’s Player of the Week was an “early adopter” and fan of Munzee, and has helped us grow from the early days.  He’s a strong community leader/icon, not just with Munzee but in every day life.  This week’s Player of the Week and co-host of the much anticipated Munzee Madness III event is Josh Broadwater, also known as H2OKLAN!

Josh Munzee Shirt

Who are you? H2OKLAN

Where in the world do you live? Yorba Linda, California USA! Home of the annual Munzee Madness event!

How long have you played Munzee? Since August 20th, 2011…50 days after Munzee launched.

How did you find Munzee?

I was attending an International ‘caching Day event in Irvine, CA and a guy (snapshot7, who is now a good friend of mine) was wearing a huge laminated necklace with this funny looking barcode on it. I asked him what it was and he explained it was a new game called Munzee and the barcode was called a QR code. He explained how it worked and also told me he and two of his friends were the only ones in Southern California who were playing so they wanted to introduce it to others. His excitement drew me in. I capped a few munzees that day, including his necklace, and knew I had found my new addiction. I deployed my first munzee a few hours later near my house and it is still deployed. http://www.munzee.com/m/H2OKLAN/1/

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

When I first started playing, I had my sights set on taking over the #1 spot on the world leader board. To me, Munzee was all about the points and getting as many as I could as soon as possible. As I was the only one in my area, there were very few munzees to cap so I decided it was up to me to grow the map in my area. I had deployed well over 1500 munzees before one of them was capped. I wanted to get more people interested in Munzee so I deployed them in, and near, my own ‘caches. Well, after lots of work I reached my goal of taking over the #1 spot on the world leader board and stayed there for quite a while (Not sure exactly how long though). I was also the first person ever to reach 100,000 points the old fashioned way. Anyone else remember when greenies were the ONLY Munzee type?

H2OKLAN MUNZEE

One of the coolest things about Munzee was seeing people become members and begin “munzing” (an H2OKLAN term meaning hunting munzees) because of one of my deployed munzees. This was the case with one of my awesome friends, 1849. As he put it, “I first heard of Munzee in a couple of logs on one of my ‘caches. Two people mentioned finding it, as well as the Munzee that was located right nearby (one of H2OKLAN’s). So I googled “Munzee”, thought it sounded fun and downloaded the app. I then went out to my ‘cache, found the Munzee and capped it. From that point on, I was hooked!” This was the start of a great friendship…and Munzee Madness!!! I feel the best part is the friends I have made because of Munzee and Munzee Madness. I am a very social person and love talking and interacting with others that have the same interests!

1849 and I wanted to have a Munzee event so we could meet new friends and introduce Munzee to more people. We knew what we had to do but were not sure if we could do it. We toyed with ideas and things to do. After a couple of weeks, we knew what we wanted to do with our event. We had everything set. Everything but one important thing…a name for our event! We wanted a name that would stand out to everyone. I knew it was going to be held in March and everything on the television was about March Madness. I suggested the name Munzee Madness. 1849 smiled and we both knew that was it! This year will be the third Munzee Madness we have co-hosted (<–Click this link if you’re interested in learning more about Munzee Madness 3 or would like to attend)!

What is on your wish list?

My wish list is very simple…MORE EVENTS AND BADGES!!!

Since Munzee Madness is near and dear to my heart, I would like to see more people hosting events similar to Munzee Madness. It doesn’t have to be a huge event. All it has to have is “munzers” (another H2OKLAN term meaning people who play the game of Munzee) and a place to have fun and socialize! I’m here to help if you have questions on what to do and how to host your own event. You can always Contact me through Facebook!

Another thing I would like to see in the future is badges that are retroactive back to the beginning of Munzee. If you were #13 on the daily leader board ever, you would get the unlucky badge. If you ever had 314 points in one day, you would get the PI badge. I think you get the point.

I am very happy with the way things are going at MHQ and want to be involved in helping Munzee grow HUGE!!!

Munzee Valentines: Players of the Week Jeff and Rachel Ware!

Team Munzee is all about sharing the love.  Whether it’s a love of the game, growing the map, or each other, we’re here for a quiet night in capping Socials together, or out painting the town “red”!

This Valentine’s day we wanted to do something small, but special.  We took a look at some of our player couples and decided to give a special shoutout to an amazing pair of Munzee peeps that share a love of each other, and Munzee!  This week’s Players of the Week are Rachel and Jeff Ware!

DSCN0874

Who are you (both), and what are your player names?

We are Jeff Ware (Xombie1013) and Rachel Ware (BooGirs)

Where in the world do you live?

We Live in Jefferson City, MO

How long have you played Munzee?  I started: May 30th 2013. Rachel started: June 4th 2013

How did you find Munzee?  Did you find Munzee together, or did one of you introduce the other to it?

I found it first, I was out geocaching with some friends and found a QR code in a cache, scanned it and was instantly hooked. A few day later I got Rachel to download the app.

Seriously, who “fell in love” with Munzee first?  That would be me (Xombie1013)!!! 🙂

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

Its an activity we can do easily together and with out 7yo daughter. Very easy to play and grow the map.  And besides the usual parking lot you can find beautiful locations, places we would have never thought of going there if it wasn’t for that little green marker on the map.
DSCN0885

What is on your wish list?

We came up with an idea for a special munzee type…called Bomb Munzee, random greenies would turn into “invisible” bomb munzees, (they stay green on the map) capper and owner would get a certain amount of points, and munzees in a 200 ft radius would get shrapnel points (1-3) then bomb will jump to another location. And capper would still get a bomb icon.   (Editor’s note: Oooh, this sounds interesting!)
Another cool idea would be the ability to buy a patch for each badge you have unlocked. (can’t buy it unless you have the badge)

Tell us about yourself!

We first met at our apartment ( she was next door over) about 2 years after she moved to town.  A random double rainbow (unicorn farts) as Rachel calls them, made us both go outside at the same time…..and been together since! (aww)

Got any special Munzee plans for Valentines?

We do have Munzee plans on Valentines Day!! I’m working out of town 4 days a week, and come home on the weekends.  This Valentines Day weekend my wife and daughter are coming down to SW Missouri, and she suggested we go Munzeeing for 2 days straight! Gonna paint the town green!! (then red) 🙂
DSCN0881
Do you have any other hobbies?
Rachel likes to make sculptures, and jewelry.  We both like to play video games, we both geocache.  I play Disc Golf!
Happy Valentine’s Day Xombie1013 & BooGirs! Just to make your weekend special, we’ve deployed two Diamonds in your accounts.  That should put a smile on BooGir’s face!  They were both sweet enough to share the love of their Social Munzee with us!

Munzee Player of the Week: CoffeeEater

“Greatness surrounds greatness” -so it’s no surprise that this week’s Player of the Week is a part of the tight-knit clan community of  Phoenix Rising, Z QRew & FireBirdZ with other POTW Alumni!   This week’s Player of the Week is Scott Cable, aka CoffeeEater!

scott cable better

Who are you? CoffeeEater

Where in the world do you live? Pittsburgh, PA, USA

How long have you played Munzee? 2 1/2 Years

How did you find Munzee? Actually my Wife did, she was reading a blog for mothers and the day’s post was on letterboxing. As part of the blog post the author mentioned Munzee as something new her family was looking into. I was at my desk charting out some ideas for a future cache when she suggested this Munzee thing I may be interested in. My response; “ahh what’s a ‘Munzee’? Sounds weird.” After checking out the site I quickly had my first one deployed in front of my computer to test it out. Then realizing I don’t want people coming to my house I undeployed it and redeployed a couple days later- July 30, 2011- to kick off my new hobby!

What do you enjoy most about Munzee? In the beginning it was all about the points, I loved it! Dropping new Munzees and making sure any new pins where cleared from the map while seeing myself climb the ranks was very addictive. This was back in the day, Superman was #1 around maybe ~12,000 points I made my way up inside the top 20 along with another local player, logsplitter. As with many areas and a new game, the growth was slow, and I took a short hiatus from play.

Take 2 and a few months gone by, I checked out the happenings at Munzee and the local map that was growing while I was hibernating back in cache land. It became clear that I should have had some patience! The game started evolving in so many ways and I was instantly more obsessed than before, lol.

Honestly, I still like points but I really enjoy making specific trails and enjoying the game with others especially new players like CPTskg & rgm129 out there getting their feet wet. For me I think the game really hit pay-dirt with clans and the team work it takes to make that happen every month. Luckily for me I hooked up with a great clan with the Phoenix Rising & Z QRew.

What is on your wish list? Personally I just want to have fun and be part of what keeps it that way. I guess a more specific goal would be to get back into the top 100 and the badge that comes with it. I think I said that somewhere before, ahh yes the testimonial that you may see pop up on the about Munzee page “I’ve been playing and enjoying the game for over a year. I’m still having fun and can’t wait to see my name in the top 100 :).”…yep same goal 🙂

I think it could be fun to include some type of series Munzee that’s progressive in the field. My thought is that it would work similar to the quiz Munzees but answering correctly would unlock the next stage. Stage 1 would be visible to all, but stage 2 and so forth can’t be seen at all on the map until 1 is unlocked. Unlocking stage 1 would have to trigger a notification or pop up to alert you to where the next stage is located. In my little dream world the points would be 20pts max for each stage for a total of 100pts after finding and answering them all correctly the first time. Again similar to the quiz Munzee, less points for chances taken to get the correct answer. Since we’re in the CoffeeEater dream world, this obviously includes a set of badges.

Tell us about yourself! My real name is Scott Cable, and I have a wonderful family including my wife Amber and our two daughters. The eldest princess, Makenna, just turned 7 and young princess, Elena, is 4. I’m a Mechanical Engineer by trade, working for a water filtration company in the small town of Zelineople, PA. The majority of the time I Munzee solo, and in the dark. Later at night just ends up being when I get my free time, and I’m a night hawk anyway so it all works out.

My wife is a great health coach, and loves to do what she can to help others in their journey. You just might find a social Munzee somewhere here: http://www.myleancoach.com/

In general I’m pretty darn boring and outside of Family and work, I find myself shifting from one obsession to another. You’ll probably find few others with a music listening range like mine. With an over 50,000 song collection you can easily find me listening to some 80’s hair band, punk rock, jazz, old school rap, and to nail down an absolute favorite, that would have to be Metallica.

Music aside I’m a huge movie fanatic to boot. If you came over looking for a movie I probably have it. Similar to music I have a large range of genre interests, but always seam to roll back to Crime especially Gangster.

“As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster.” -Henry Hill

I wasn’t always known as CoffeeEater, during my days as a Boy Scout I was Turtle. First time out on a backpacking trip with my troop I thought I was tough or I at least wanted everyone else to think so. I offered to carry more and more to the point it was way too much. I took a break near a hillside along the trail at which point someone bumped me. I rolled down the hill and at the bottom I rolled around but couldn’t manage to get myself back up with everything stuck to my back. From that point forward, it was Turtle.

Thanks to those who nominated me and to MHQ for keeping this great game moving forward!

Scott was awesome enough to share his Social with us.  Here it is!
