Badges for Mythological Munzees are Here!

The release of the Unicorn and Leprechaun Munzees left us (and you) with the inevitable question: When are associated badges being released? As you may have deduced from a previous social post, they have arrived!

Today, we are releasing two badge lines: one for Unicorns and one for Leprechauns. Each line currently has three classes for capturing a number of unique Mythological Creatures: 1 Unicorn/Leprechaun, 50 Unicorns/Leprechauns, and 100 Unicorns/Leprechauns.

These badges aren’t cross-creature, i.e.27 Unicorns and 23 Leprechauns do not equal a badge for either.

Do you have what it takes to rise the ranks? Get out there and prove it! Munzee on!

DPD 4 EOM

That’s right it’s Double Point Days for End Of March!

Not all players can enjoy double points on weekends. *See DPD announcement for this weekend on greens and emeralds at the bottom of a previous blog post* Not all players can enjoy double points on weekdays. The world is big and there is never a perfect time for everyone in our worldwide community. This blog post is going out many hours later than our typical posts during the MHQ workday for that reason. *Hello to our players Down Under who may be currently awake and playing, and sweet dreams to those in Europe who may be resting!*

The purpose of this post is to inform you of an upcoming special occasion. Double Point Days! Let’s end March by celebrating the players who put in time to do battle each month with their Munzee clan. From March 29th 00:01 through March 31st 23:59 MHQ time (UTC -5) all clan weapons will be double points. This includes deploy, capture, and cap on points for the 4 weapon types. The Mace, Longsword, Battle Axe, and The Hammer.

We hope you’ve enjoyed March as much as we have (and it’s only halfway through). Thank you to our players who faithfully compete in clan battles every month. If you have a stockpile of weapons, NOW is the time to prepare them for deploy! If you’ve never joined a Munzee clan, the trading window opens April 1st at 00:01 for the April battle.

Player of the Week: Marie Crossman (rosieree)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Marie Crossman (rosieree).

Marie5Who are you?

My name is Marie Crossman a/k/a rosieree.

Where in the world do you live?
I live near the Orlando area of Florida, USA in Longwood.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing Munzee on September 14, 2014.

How did you find Munzee?
My husband was playing and capping the “ice” when those were out. I basically was bored watching him, so I decided to go online, make my name, and begin capping the ice too! That was it! I was totally hooked 🙂 Our first road trip was to the inaugural MHQ Bash in Texas.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I love the fact that I get to walk around some beautiful places that I have never been before in search of a munzee. And the people…oh my, I don’t even know where to begin. I love meeting new people, some of who have become dear friends. I enjoy the events too! We always have a great time hanging out. I love to introduce new people to Munzee and having them get as excited as I do. I appreciate the charities Munzee supports. I find it very rewarding to know that those charities are benefiting from my play! I also love the Social Munzees and have so much fun every month exchanging socials within our group from all over the world! Munzee really does have the best people!

What is on your wish list?
I love the badges, so I am happy that more have been added. Now I would love some new badges for deploying/capping socials. The specials jumping from greenie to greenie is a huge plus, and I love to chase after them! More specials and more badges would be super!

Tell us about yourself!
I am the wife to my best friend ever, my husband Warren and mom to five grown children. We have the most precious grandson who loves to walk the trails “looking” for a munzee or anything else that catches his eye (he is now 5 years). I enjoy baking and time with my family and friends and of course our Munzee trips!

Other hobbies include:
When I am not out Munzeeing, I love to do research for my genealogy which has taken me on many road trips. Being a wife, mom, and now a grandma is my greatest joy!

Any last words?
I feel so totally blessed for this nomination. I would like to thank my husband and all my friends who have given me so much joy in this game. I belong to the best group of folks for my clan, the FMH Superchuckers, and appreciate their support each and every month! Also, thank you to all the folks at MHQ for their outstanding work. You all ROCK!

rosieree also included some socials, so cap away!

Request for Closed Captioning Assistance

Part of growing the Munzee community is being able to reach new audiences. We want to be able to grow the map and help players around the world. To do this, though, we need your help.

We’re asking for volunteers fluent in languages other than English to help add Closed Captioning in multiple languages to our YouTube videos. We’re aware that English is not the primary language of all of our players, and we want to be able to share the game with everyone. The first video we would like to Close Caption is the “Just what are QR codes?” video.

YouTube has instructions for Closed Captioning and subtitles that can be found here. Volunteers who help will be compensated in some form to be determined at a later date and credited in the video description.

If you’re interested in helping, please email iloveyou@munzee.com so we can start!

Shamrocks and Easter Events

It’s hard to believe we are almost halfway through March. It’s been an exciting month so far, but there is plenty more to come. Let’s touch on a few items to start the week.

Shamrocks

The response to the sale of Virtual and Physical Shamrocks to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy organizations has been amazing! The donations that will be made from this fundraiser will be our largest yet, and it’s all because of you. We’re proud to have such wonderful and caring players.

As a reminder, both virtual and physical shamrocks will be removed from the store on March 17th at 23:59 MHQ time. (Reminder: MHQ is now UTC -5:00 due to Daylight Savings in Texas.) Virtual Shamrocks will remain on the map through April 10th at 23:59 MHQ time. You still have plenty of time to deploy and capture them before they disappear! Physical Shamrocks will remain on the map permanently. After they are removed from the store, they will become a MunzPak and special release item only.

Easter Events

Louise wanted us to share some (puntastic) information regarding Easter Events:

“Don’t be a chicken, hatch some plans to attend our Easter Events running from 17th March until 10th April. That’s right, they begin this week! Check the calendar or app for the closest events to you.

Team Munzee will be getting out and about to the events too, this Saturday we have Matt in Vancouver, Louise in London and Daniel Fischer in Prague. One or more members of MHQ will be attending the events this weekend in Southlake, TX too.

Don’t forget to capture the Event Indicator pin at each event you go to, it counts towards the number of attendees for the Party Crasher badges and the Easter Events are loaded with surprises for you, some of them hidden for now….
Magic Eggs have been made available to hosts for each Easter Event. If the event has an Event Badge it will be coded to that, if not, hosts will be made aware of which Munzee it’s linked to. Each player that captures the Magic Egg gets something free. I’m not yolking, these items are very egg-citing 😉 !

We hope you will join in with the Easter Bonnet competition at each event. There is a badge and a gallery on the blog waiting for you! It’s free to enter, just wear your best Easter hat and you’re in with a chance. Hosts will decide on the winner and send me the player name and a photo after the event. We can’t wait to see you in your best Easter hat!

Stay on the sunny side up and have an egg-ceptional week! Event hosts with any questions, please contact louise@munzee.com.”

Our thanks to Louise for the great job she does managing and promoting our worldwide events. We would also like to thank our event hosts and hostesses because none of this is possible without you. Thanks for supporting our 2016 mission to grow local Munzee communities. Team Munzee is excited for what’s to come, and we hope you will be too!

Munzee on!

Small note from Rob: Double points on greens and emeralds only will begin Thursday, March 17 @ 00:01 through Sunday, March 20 @ 23:59 🙂 This is a scavenger hunt, so of course I’ve hidden this message at the bottom. An Easter egg if you will. See you out there on the trail.

Munzee With Team Munzee: March

The first two Munzee With Team Munzee events of the year have been great! We’ve loved being able to get out and play the game with our wonderful players. This month, we’ll be doing it slightly differently.

Because of the holiday weekend during the last weekend of the month, we’ll be having the MWTM event on Thursday, March 24th. We will be meeting at the Parker Road DART Station in Plano, TX and riding the train down to Deep Ellum. After lunch, we’ll head on back up and part ways!

We’ll be catching the 9am train from Parker Road Station, starting the event at 10am at the big metal robot at Deep Ellum Station, and end up back at the Parker Road Station at 1pm.

The MWTM event is on the Munzee calendar, so check it out!

Munzee and “Voices in America”

If you attended MHQ Bash 2015 or saw pictures from the events, you may have noticed some cameramen shooting footage and conducting interviews. We’re proud to announce that Munzee will have a segment published that was filmed and produced by “Voices In America”.

“Voices In America” produces stories and documentaries featuring a variety of topics and trends to educate and entertain the public. These short form videos are distributed both on their website and through Public Television to reach audiences and expand knowledge. Below is the informational video about QR-codes and how Munzee uses them!

This video will be aired on public broadcasting television in the near future. When we have a firm date and time of it’s airing, we will pass that information on to you.

Also included in this process was the production of a Munzee commercial. The first airing of this commercial will be today, Thursday, March 10th at 19:18 CST during CNN Headline News. (We were told that the commercials generally air within 15 minutes of their scheduled times, but they may occur in the hour window surrounding those times.) We encourage you to watch the commercial when it’s aired!

We’re also launching www.playmunzee.com to help new players better understand the game. If a visitor to the Munzee site is not logged in, they will be redirected there. Don’t fret! You’ll still be able to navigate the regular Munzee website once you’re logged in!

We are extremely excited for the potential growth that this can provide for Munzee as a company and a game.  We can’t thank you enough for your support, and we know any new players will be welcomed with open arms to our great community.

Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Corey Mark

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Corey Mark (SpySmurf).

We Are Proud of Our CowsWho are you?
SpySmurf, aka SpySmurf. Husband, father of 2, and self-confessed 80’s guru.

Where in the world do you live?
Mooroopna, Victoria, Australia. A small country town with a population of 8,000 nestled in the “fruit bowl” of Victoria. A short distance from Shapparton that is striving to be the Munzee Capital of Australia!

How long have you played Munzee?
Since 2012.

How did you find Munzee?SpySmurf & Rubik80
I stumbled across a Munzee sticker inside a Tupperware container that was hidden in a tree stump. The sticker was a “swap” item that I exchanged and carried around in my wallet for some time before I jumped online to see what this Munzee thing was all about. With the assistance of a good mate (Rubik80), things escalated quickly!

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?

  1. Getting out and about and walking with my kids (collingwood14 and PrincessKitty). It’s a great way for them to exercise without even realising it. We have stumbled across some great locations doing this.
  2. The growth of the game locally. Initially it was mostly Rubik80 and I placing Munzees around the Shepparton area and waiting for visitors to come down. The interest has certainly grown, and the number of people chasing munzees locally has increased over the past year. It has been great to meet up with new players at the events we have held, especially kids and parents out and about together.
  3. I have really enjoyed the challenge of chasing specials across the map and where they bounce to next. Rubik80 and I had a few crazy times earlier on with the occasional mid-week, late night run that often took us on a 3 hour round trip to cap a piece of piñata, for example. It is now a litter easier since the number of greenies locally has grown.
  4. The dedication of the MHQ staff, and the visit that Rob took Down Under in 2015 to help celebrate the Australia Day event. That was a great effort and appreciated by all that attended the event. We might try and encourage Louise or Matt for the next? (Editor’s Note: Let’s get #LouiseAndMattToAustralia trending.)
  5. The support from MHQ in raising awareness and funds for great causes such as those via the RMH and heart virtuals. I think rainbow virtuals would look awesome of the map in support of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation (organ & tissue donation) locally if something liek that was possible down the track.

Kids & The Munzee Serenity

What is on your wish list?

  1. Capturing more badges and specials. Trying to work out how does one get that tricky glitch badge? I am now also attempting the capture and deploy super streak. Let’s hope I don’t muck it up on day 276 or something like that.
  2. I would love to pay a visit to MHQ in downtown McKinney. Perhaps have a quiet ale or 3 with the team over lunch.
  3. It’s not easy being green! For MHQ to continue to keep the love for the greenies alive as has been done with the Back to the Future and Frogger days. A few more double/triple point days throughout the year that encourage people to get out on foot would be great.

Tell us about yourself!
I am 46 and married to a supportive wife who doesn’t mind the odd Munzee trip as well. I have 2 children (James and Tilly) who join me on most Munzee trips. We have a pet rabbit called Poppy who surprisingly doesn’t Munzee. It may be an issue with not having opposable thumbs.

The Crew

My background is nursing, and I currently work as an intake clinician and bed juggler for a community-based rehabilitation program. It’s a great and rewarding job, and I work with an awesome and caring team.

Other hobbies include:
When not on a Munzee trip, I enjoy collecting and listening to records, wandering the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, and testing my stamina in what we call a Mad Cow Mud Run (bit like a Tough Mudder) with Rubik80. The next one is in March, and I feel the pain already!

Any last words?
I am somewhat humbled by being nominated for POTW and appreciate the time to tell my story. My life and work experience has often shown me that the loudest voices are not always the ones that need to be heard. Munzee is like most things in life, so do what makes you happy!

SpySmurf also included some socials, so cap away!

Munzee Madness 5 Recap

Rob, Matt, and Robbie headed out West this past weekend to attend Munzee Madness 5 at Yorba Regional Park in (kinda) sunny California. They had a great time, and we want to share their experiences with everyone.

First, though, we want to thank and congratulate our wonderful reseller Elliot and his team for putting on the event. Their five events spanning two days went extremely well. The effort and passion they have for the game shone through and blew everyone away. We’d also like to thank all of the players who participated, both in person or by placing virtuals at the events. Points and badges were bountiful. Attendees for one of the Friday events received the Party Crasher Attendee badge while the main Saturday event earned attendees the Centurion Attendee badge. The huge turnouts at the events were wonderful to see.

On to our stories:

Friday

MM5 began Friday when Elliot hosted players at his shop as a preliminary meet and greet. They were invited to come hang out and hunt down the special icons in the surrounding area. At 5:30, we all packed up and headed over to Food Truck Fandango. Elliot and his team worked with a local food truck group that sets up every Friday night in a parking lot. Each food truck had a Munzee on it, so everyone, both Munzee players and the general public, were able to see what Munzee is about. Rob and Matt were shamefully beat in a game of Trouble by two teenagers. After a few hours of eating (way too much) amazing food and capping, everyone headed home for the night.

Saturday

Saturday began bright and early with a breakfast event. We all met up, ate, and capped some before heading to the main event. We all migrated to Yorba Regional Park for the real fun. Between capping and eating, Rob executed his Presidential duties of shaking hand and kissing babies (and/or scaring children 😉 ) while Matt and Robbie played Frisbee and other games with attendees. Robbie then integrated the first WallaBee event with Munzee. Everyone then switched gears to take pictures for the Eventzee portion of the day. We ended the event with prizes and some announcements from Rob. We couldn’t end their, of course, so we headed out to dinner at a local restaurant.

We overran Knowlwood down the street for some more great food and one-on-one interaction with players. Matt tested some new toys, and Rob reclaimed his gaming throne by beating everyone (including Matt) at air hockey. He was (and still is) very pleased with himself.

Sunday

Though the official MM5 events were over, Matt and Rob weren’t done quite yet. They took a drive out to the desert to revive some of first special icons ever to appear on the Munzee map. There are now 3 WaywardNation icons live on the map in the Southern California area.

Now you may be wondering why we wanted to share these things with you (other than you know we like to talk about ourselves). To us, attending events is very special. When we’re at the office, we really only get to see one side of Munzee. We’re constantly trying to come up with new ideas, improve the game, and generally make everything run smoothly. When we’re out at events or in the field, though, we get to experience what you do. We see what happens. We get to talk to players one-on-one and hear their experiences. We get to actually interact with the people that make this game so great. We don’t go to events for the attention or for pats on the back. We go because we appreciate everything you do and want to help your events in any way we can. So long story short, thank you. You are the ones who make this game so great, and everything we do, we do for you. #MunzeeOn
