Resort, RUM, and Recycle Badges!

Badges are a large part of Munzee, and we love adding new and exciting ones to be earned. As you may have noticed, we launched five new badge lines this morning. These lines are for Virtual Resorts, RUMs, and Recycle Icons.

Virtual Resorts

Two lines of badges have been added for Virtual Resorts: one for capture and one for deploy. Each line currently has three badges associated with it and can be found along with Motel and Hotel badges in the app and on the website.

The badges in the capture line are awarded for renting a room in 25, 75, and 100 Virtual Resorts, respectively.

The badges in the deploy line are awarded for owning and deploying 5, 25, and 50 Virtual Resorts, respectively.

RUMs

Capture and deploy lines have also been added for the Reseller Unique Munzees (RUMs). There are also three badges in each of these lines.

The badges in the capture line are awarded for capturing 5, 10, and 25 RUMs, respectively.

The badges in the deploy line are for deploying 1, 5, and 10 RUMs, respectively.

There’s more in the works for RUM badges, so keep an eye out.

Recycle Icons

Last, but not certainly not least, we’ve added a line for the Recycle Special. These badges are for capturing 1, 50, and 100 Recycle Icons, respectively.

These have been just the beginning of new badges and lines to come. We’re excited to unveil them soon!

MunzPak Updates and Changes

The MunzPak team is always looking for ways to improve the experience of our subscribers. Over the past almost two years, that has varied from introducing MunzPak exclusive items to special pre-releases and beyond. Our number one goal, as with the other parts of the company, is to engage and excite our community. A large part of this goal is customer service. Our next step in this goal is giving you more control of your subscription.

On Friday, we will launch a new MunzPak central location. It will replace the current page: https://www.munzee.com/munzpak. If you are a current MunzPak subscriber, scroll down to the horizontal line in this post to learn about the new central page. If you are not currently a MunzPak subscriber, you will see a landing page similar to the current one.

When you click “Subscribe”, a payment confirmation will pop up.

Clicking “OK” will cause a pop-up window from the payment service Stripe for billing, shipping, and payment information. By default, shipping and billing information is marked as the same. There are a few things to note:

  1. As always, the day you subscribe to MunzPak is the day you are charged and processed for shipping. That date will be the same in following months. (e.g. If you subscribe on August 17th, your next draft date will be September 17th for processing and shipping.)
  2. Updating your address, credit card, or email address DOES NOT change your draft date.
  3. After the launch of this page, we will NO LONGER be updating information manually. If you need to change any of this, YOU must do it.
  4. We will also NO LONGER manually change draft dates. If you would like to change your draft date, you must unsubscribe and resubscribe on the date of your choosing.
  5. Munzee DOES NOT store your credit card information on our servers. It is, and always has been, processed through the payment infrastructure company Stripe.

We hope these changes and additions make your MunzPak experience easier than ever! Remember this all goes live Friday, August 19, 2016.

Player of the Week: Thorsten Linn (TrialbyFire)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Thorsten Linn (TrialbyFire).

IMG-20160416-WA0002Who are you?

I am TrialbyFire, the man with the dragon socials. My real name is Thorsten. I am 38, and I am going to marry my fiancé, Raphaela (MunzeeAssistentin) on July 30th.I am quite excited about that. Deploys in Speyer as a present are very welcome 😉 .(Editor’s Note: We’re sorry for the delay in posting, but congratulations!)

Where in the world do you live?
I live in a small village in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis in Germany near the worldknown cities Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Speyer. They are known for their castles, their huge US, French, and English army bases, and especially Speyer for it’s famous cathedral. All the cities existed in the medieval times, so they are quite nice to explore by foot while finding some munzees, of course 😉 .

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing at the beginning of February 2012. I think it was the third. At the time, JOK was the number 1 player in the world with around 29k. I thought I could never reach that in a long time…

How did you find Munzee?
My former work colleague and friend MV1 introduced me to it. He played the game with the plastic cans which I never did, and he told me about it. I downloaded the app and was hooked. A couple of days later, I found my first special — the Valentine heart. I think I was one of the first players to start playing Munzee without experience in the other game. Then, MV1 and I began greening our suburb and touring around. Our first tour was 90km one way to get out first thousand points around Mainz. It took us about 6 hours, and we walked around 20km that day. Yeah, it was hard work then!

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I like the competing moments and check the leaderboard and statistics several times a day — whether I can gain or lose places or how often my munzees have been captured. But now, it is hard to climb the ladder due to more people buying their way to the top rather than capturing it. 30k captures and 3 million points is kind of unsatisfactory for players capping only greenies at the beginning and walking and driving to capture a lot every month now.

I also like collecting all kinds of special icons and badges, and I am willing to drive some distance to capture them. I like travelling, exploring parts of towns besides the tourist spots, and meeting local players. I always leave some munzees behind because I am nosy and want to know who captures them: only local players or people travelling through Germany as much as me. My next trip will be to Edinburgh/Scotland, so there will be some more munzees there in August.

But the best part is that I meet very nice people who are my friends now: my clanmates from the now 5 German Gluers clans (despite the name, we have American and English clan members, too) where I am a clan coordinator, my Berlin Munzee friends (disc220, JackSparrow, etc) where my fiancé is from, people from the Black Forest region (bvaral) where I did my second study, my co-organizers for the events here, Cosmo, and the players from the Schwoaba Munzee Clan (teamkiwi, remstaler, Meize, etc). and of course, c-bn, who is a regular visitor at our events, with whom I did my first 100k day walking through London and after that, meeting Rob and Louise and many morenice people at the event at Clapham Common. It was really a great day!

I am glad now that Munzee had developed into a self-contained game with mixing the other game. Thank you MHQ staff for that!

What is on your wish list?

  1. I want the game to be as fair as it can be, so limits on special and charity sales, eg. 150 per person so people do not get 800k in a day by sitting at home doing nothing.
  2. I would like the game to become more virtual due to easier accessibility in regions outside big cities, and of course, due to the lack of possibilities to deploy munzees within the cities. All of the good spots are gone, so let’s use parks without using trees, benches, or rotten wood, and let use use the huge housing blocks to grow the map.
  3. A second Emerald Garden in Germany. We Germans have been great supporters since the beginning and we only have one garden in Berlin. I think we deserve another one, BUT it should not be built near the big Munzee regions. Please, put it where a smaller community plays to attract new players from outside and help grow this region. I would like it best near or in Frankfurt/Main where we have the biggest airport in Germany, and it is great to be reached by train and car, as well.
  4. I would like to see at lease one staff member come over to our event on the German National Holiday on October 3rd in Ludwigshafen so we have the chance to meet you (again). Everyone is wholeheartedly welcome, of course! 🙂
  5. If another Mythological Munzee is released, turn the tables around and let the players with all three up to now buy the first to fill their collection.

Tell us about yourself:
Actually, I am a secondary school teacher for English, Latin, and Catholic religious studies, but I did another study in Social Work after that, and now, I work for the youth welfare services, driving through my administrative district helping families, especially children of course, within the range of school, diseases (e.g. ADHS, autism, etc), disabilities, administrative problems, education, etc.

I live with my soon-to-be wife in a little house with a garden in a small village with our 4 guinea pigs and my beloved fish tank.

Other hobbies include:
I am a huge TV series junkie and a huge fan of Fantasy Fiction, which includes my favorite authors Robin Hobb and George R.R. Martin (read the books first, then watch Game of Thrones).

My biggest hobby is football (soccer). I am a huge football fan, not especially fanatic for one club (I support FC Bayern München), but I love discussing it with like-minded people. I was a football trainer for many years, and I like teaching kids both football tactics and social skills together. I built a girls section in my former football club, and now, the girls have played for six years. I like seeing their development from being strangers to a close group of friends and becoming one team. Unfortunately, with my new job, it is hard to train a team again due to it not being a 9 to 5 job.

I like Scotch Whiskey as well, and I have a small but delicious collection at home (about 20 bottles) which will be bigger after my holidays in Edinburgh 😉

IMG-20160715-WA0005Any last words?
I want to thank the person who nominated me for this. I was really surprised and never expected it because I do not do special things at all.

I’d like to thank MHQ for their good work: Clan Wars are always interesting, we get cool artwork for our events and special icons, we have excellent support during our events, and we are happy with your great ideas that keep the game interesting for everyone.

At last, my favorite quote from Marin Luther King, which everyone should think about:

“We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to mankind.”

Referral Code Competition Winners!

During the end of last month, we had a competition with Referral Codes. The premise? The three people who have their referral codes scanned the most during the time period win. Well we’ve calculated the numbers, and we have some winners! The top three are:

  1. Siiri70
  2. gyrodude

Congratulations! You’ll be contacted shortly regarding your prizes.

We want to thank everyone who participated and helped grow the game! Munzee is all about community, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the wonderful community of players we have. We can’t wait to see where our sixth year takes us, and we’re glad you’re along for the ride!

Player of the Week: Pekka Lavi (RePe)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Pekka Lavi (RePe).

2015-07-29 19.44.47Who are you?
My name is Pekka Lavi, known in Munzee as RePe. When I started playing Munzee, I created mu username with my wife Reetta, so RePe is mixture of our first names. We have used it for our team for 10 years. RePe is in English is Daffy, and you can find Daffy Duck in my profile picture. My wife created her own Munzee account about 2 years ago, and I still play this family name.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Lieto, Finland with my wife and son. Lieto is a little town in Western Finland.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing on July 27th 2013 after a caching event. I started playing seriously in December 2013 when I joined a local clan. Since then, I have been playing actively. I have played in 32 Clan War in a row.

How did you find Munzee?
First, I read it in Finland’s caching webpages forum, and at the caching event, I saw it live and created an account there. In 2013, there were not many munzees in the Lieto area, but nowadays there are a lot of munzees to capture and many active players.

33735_1563506844317_3588209_n

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I like to be outdoors and seek new places with my family. It is also fun to go in the evening or night for a little walk or bicycle ride to capture Mythologicals or special munzees nearby, I have also met many great new people through Munzee.

What is on your wish list?

  1. I love the badges, so I hope for more to come (especially more badges for physical munzees like Scatter, Jewels, RPS, etc.)
  2. A Munzee holiday with my family in a large Munzee city.
  3. Change the Accessibility Munzee to be equivalent to the Greenie for all bouncing special types.
  4. Rob coming to Finland

Tell us about yourself:2015-08-07 10.38.42
I’m a 34-year-old science teacher in the upper comprehensive school and an ICT pedagogical consultant in the city. I love math! 🙂 As I said, I have a wife Reetta Ja and a three-year-old son. I live near Turku which is a quite big Munzee city with new emerald garden! (Thank you MHQ to our Emerald Garden). I like physical munzee trails, and I love capping all Mythological and special munzees. I’ am also the creator and administrator of Finland’s Munzee Facebook group.

Other hobbies include:
I enjoy anything that has to do with outside: gardening, swimming, picking wild berries and mushrooms, caching, and of course, Munzee. I also collect Donald Duck comics, and I have almost all Donald Duck comic books that have been published during 50 years in Finland.

Any last words?
Grow the map, and keep smiling (it is only game)!

Recycle Icons – Take 2

The launch of the Recycle Special at the end of June led to a large number of missing munzees being replaced or archived. This helped rejuvenate and clean up the Munzee Map. The problem with specials is that they’re often a limited time. Despite the great strides made during the Recycle Special time frame, there were still many Munzees that were left with icons when time was up. So by popular demand, we’ve decided to reintroduce the Recycle Special.

Starting tomorrow (August 12th) at 00:01 MHQ time, Recycle Icons will once again appear on the map. As a refresher, these icons will be on (some) physical munzees that have not been capped in the last 365 days. You will earn 25 points for capping the Recycle Special, and the owner will earn 10 points. You do not get the points/icon associated with the original munzee (e.g. If a Recycle Icon is on a Mini Mystery, you do NOT get the random split of points AND the points for Recycle Icon.)

This is again a “one and done” special. Once the icon is capped, the Munzee returns to its normal icon. You CAN capture this icon on munzees that you have capped before. You CANNOT capture this icon on your own munzees.

The affected munzees are:

  • Clan Weapons
  • Greenies
  • Physical Mysteries
  • Premium Munzees

The major difference between this time and the last is the exclusion of physical jewels. This is due to August Clan Requirements.

If you find one of the Recycle Icons is on a missing or damaged munzee, PLEASE mark it as Unable to Locate or Needs Repair. This is done in-app, at the location, from the Munzee details page. Use the dropdown menu in the top right corner, then tap “Leave Entry”. Maintenance of physicals is VERY important to the game.

The Recycle Icons will be on the map until Sunday, August 21st at 23:59 MHQ time.

Reminder: While this is a worldwide initiative it will only effect munzees that have NOT been captured in the last 365 days! Some areas may be covered while others are not. Consider yourself fortunate if your area has been active in the last 365 days!

We hope you enjoy the revival of the Recycle Icon. Munzee on!

Limited Mythological Release

We’ve said it a lot, but Birthday Month is over. Unsurprisingly, not everything that happens during a month such as that wraps up cleanly with a nice little bow. Like with any birthday party, there is always some cleaning up to do. So, as we’ve been tidying up and getting set on the future, we’ve come across some straggler Mythological Munzees. (It’s not something new. Remember those 12 mischievous Leprechauns that escaped?) So we’ve decided to spread the remaining joy around a bit.

Tomorrow (Thursday, August 11th) at 14:00 MHQ time, 250 of each of the Mythological Munzees (Unicorn, Leprechaun, and Dragon) will be available (for $20) in the Munzee Online Store (link will go live at that time as well). The will be available in three waves:

  • 14:00 MHQ Time: Premium Members who DO NOT have ANY of the three Mythological Munzees can purchase ONE Mythological.
  • 15:00 MHQ Time: Any player who DOES NOT have ANY of the three Mythological Munzees can purchase ONE Mythological.
  • 16:00 MHQ Time: Any player can purchase a Mythological REGARDLESS of ownership of others. You CANNOT purchase or own more than one of ANY of the Mythological Munzees, i.e. if you already own a Dragon Munzee, you can purchase a Leprechaun and/or a Unicorn but NOT another Dragon.

If you’re a new player who missed out on the Mythologicals or a player who wants to complete the set, this is your chance!

Munzee on!

From the Desk of Louise: Birthday Events Wrap Up

What a fab month July was, thank you to our wonderful players for helping us celebrate our 5th birthday! We’ve loved the photos and stories from the events around the world and have even received some birthday cards and presents from you, thank you very much!

robcards

There were 89 birthday events worldwide and there were 2782 caps of our lovely birthday event special… You may have seen him, Robicorn was parading around at every birthday event!

The Birthday Present add on was popular too, it was at most events and 3412 Emeralds were given away in our 10 new gardens around the world. Those gardens are almost full but there are still some Emeralds available to purchase if you haven’t bought one already (you can purchase one per day). Also, keep your suggestions for future gardens coming in here.

To keep you excited about events we have overhauled the calendar and have the new Event Trail addition. They are good to go and will start featuring at events from this weekend. See yesterday’s blog for info which now includes pricing information.

Once again thank you so much for celebrating with us, we are so proud of our wonderful worldwide community! Munzee On!

UPDATED Introducing the Event Virtual Trail

Updated January 16, 2019 with new distance and point information.

If you joined us in Denver for Birthday Bash, you may have noticed that the Virtual Trail that we put out looked a bit different. We used that event to test and refine a new type of trail for events: The Event Virtual Trail!

The Event Virtual Trail can be added as a part of events. It can have between 5 and 10 stages and has the same point structure for capturing as the regular virtual trails. There are a few key differences:

  • It can only be purchased as part of an official Munzee event.
  • Because it is an event-only munzee, there are no Deploy or CapOn points awarded.
  • Like other event munzees, Event Virtual Trails are archived at the conclusion of the event.
  • Regular virtuals can be converted in Virtual Event Trails.
  • The distance between stages is 500 feet, the same as normal Virtual Trail stages.

If you’re hosting an event soon and want to learn more about the Event Virtual Trail, Louise will be glad to help you!

The Event Trail credits are $15 for 5 stages and 10 stages for $20.

There are many uses for the Event Virtual Trail, and we can’t wait to see what you do with them! Munzee on!
