Thanksgiving 2016 Special

The Remembrance and Veteran’s Day Poppy Special honoring those who have served and those who lost their lives in the line of duty ends tonight (November 15th) at 23:59 MHQ time. If you haven’t captured one yet, you still have a bit of time! We are thankful for all members of the armed forces worldwide. Speaking of being thankful, we would like to continue the trend of giving thanks through the end of the month. With the removal of the poppies, a new special will land on the map just two minutes later.

American Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and falls on November 24th this year. The holiday traces back to a harvest feast at Plymouth in 1621 at which Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated together. (Our friends to the North celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October, and the holiday traces back to a 1578 voyage.) In modern days, Thanksgiving is celebrated with parades, feasts with family and friends (also known as “Friendsgiving”), and football.

Team Munzee wants to share this celebration with, and give thanks for, our wonderful worldwide community. When you capture a turkey leg, leave a comment on the Munzee letting the host know something you are thankful for! MHQ is thankful for the opportunity to continue providing a game that builds such a friendly and supportive community!

From 00:01 MHQ time on November 16th through 23:59 MHQ (CST) time on November 30th, there will be 1621 Turkey Leg icons on the map that will bounce on greenies every six hours, or when it is captured. You will earn 24 points for capping one of these icons, and the owner of the host greenie will earn 11 points. You will also earn the Happy Thanksgiving 2016 badge for capping one of the icons. You may NOT capture an icon on your own Munzee.

The Munzee community is a family, and we’re thankful that you are part of it.

Have fun, and Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Derek Barker (eigerman)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Derek Barker (eigerman).

potwWho are you?
Derek Barker – eigerman

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Eccleshill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK.

How long have you played Munzee?
Started in September 2012.

How did you find Munzee?
I started playing another game in May 2012 and kept finding QR codes in the containers, but I had no idea what they were as I didn’t have a smartphone at the time. This went on for several months until my son-in-law was out with me one day. He had an iPhone and looked up the details of the QR code. As a result, I joined Munzee, ordered a smartphone, and the rest is history as they say. If I remember correctly, my first day out Munzeeing was also a double point weekend, bearing in mind that there were very few munzees deployed in our area at that time. Needless to say, the fun had started.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
It’s a fun and easy game to play and suitable for all ages. I really like being in the outdoors and have made many new friends whilst playing Munzee. It’s great to go to events and meet players from other parts of the country.

What is on your wish list?
I would love to visit some of the big virtual fields in Europe.

Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Yorkshire. I am married to Lesley, and we have 2 children, Clare and Andy who are both married now, and 4 grandchildren. My eldest grandson, Jack, is also a keen Munzee player. I worked in the communication industry for 25 years and then spent 10 years with a computer supply company. I retired early due to ill health, and during my recovery period, I realised that I need to get back outdoors for some much needed exercise. As a result, I started caching, but Munzee soon followed and has remained a firm favourite.

Other hobbies include:
Walking or anything to do with the outdoors, reading mountaineering stories, and model railways.

Any last words?
I would like to say a big thank you to my fellow players for this nomination. We have an amazing team in our local group – Yorkshire Munzee Hunters. I look forward to seeing our group grow and can’t wait for our next event.

A Freeze is on the way…

Since the release of the Fire Mystery, the Munzee Map has been red hot. If you’ve been brave enough to attempt to put out the spreading fires, you know the peril that it brings. Being burned can be costly. Everything has an opposite, though. There has been a shift in the wind, and a cold front is starting to arrive. With it comes the rain, the snow, and the Ice… Mystery Munzee.

Today, we are introducing the Ice Mystery Munzee.

ice

Name: Ice Mystery Munzee

Points:
Deploy: 50
Capture/CapOn: Sum of 60 by multiples of 5 with a a minimum of 10 (e.g. 10, 25, 30, 45, etc) — Example: Capture = 45, CapOn = 15

Now, this may seem familiar. This is, in many ways, a reflection of the Fire Mystery. However, it has a different twist.

When captured, the Ice Mystery “freezes” three greenies within a mile. These will stay frozen for two hours or until capped, whichever comes first.

icespread

Capping these frozen greenies will result in two possible outcomes:

  1. There is a chance that you “thaw” the frozen greenie. If you do, you earn 50 Capture points and the owner of the host greenie earns 10  CapOn points.
  2. The other outcome is a bit more frosty. You also have the potential to get frozen. If you do, your screen will turn blue, and you cannot play for 1 minute. As with the Fire Mystery, it’s a choice of risk versus reward.

Badges: There WILL be badges for Deploy, Capture, and Being Frozen. These badges will be unveiled very soon.

Filters and /types page: Filters will be added in app and on information added to the types webpage Friday.

Availability

Ice Mystery Munzees are available NOW in the Munzee Online Store. They are physical stickers sold in blocks of 20 for $40 USD. There is currently a limit of 100 per person, per month.

We hope you enjoy the Ice Mystery Munzees!

Have fun, and Munzee on!

In Remembrance

Team Munzee would like to acknowledge several worldwide holidays taking place at the end of this week to remember and honor members of armed forces. In the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth of Nations, November 11 is Remembrance Day. This memorial day has been in place since the end of World War 1 in 1918 and serves as a time to remember those members of armed forces who have fallen in battle. The observance is signified by a single red poppy, due in part to their brilliant red color as a symbol for the blood spilled in the war. To remember the fallen, Munzee is placing a sea of red poppies on the map as special bouncing icons. In the United States and other Nations, other special services are performed on or around the 11th. Veterans Day in the United States honors individuals who have served, or currently serve, in all branches of the Armed Forces. Our team is particularly proud to honor our co-founder, Scott Foster, for his time served in the United States Air Force. Scott was stationed at the Royal Air Force Base in Lakenheath England during his active duty.

To honor and remember all members of the armed forces, here are the details about the Munzee special icon and badge. 1918 Poppy Icons will bounce around the Munzee map every 4 hours, or upon capture. A single capture will earn the Remembrance badge. The poppies will appear on regular “greenies” only, and are only able to be captured by one player before bouncing to the next Munzee. For premium members, the “only expiring munzees” advanced filter will show the poppy in app. Premium members also remember to setup “alerts” in the app on the side menu to receive alerts when an expiring special lands nearby. The host munzee and capturer will both receive 11 points. This special remembrance and veteran’s memorial munzee will appear from November 9 @ 11:00 until November 15 @ 23:59, all times CST (MHQ).

We honor and remember those who have served in armed forces worldwide and appreciate the sacrifice made by the soldiers, their families, and loved ones. May peace one day reign, but until then, God bless those in uniform and keep them safe during their service.

Player of the Week: John Wiles (nellybean63)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is John Wiles (nellybean63).

image1Who are you?

My name is John Wiles, nellybean63.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Nottingham, England.

How long have you played Munzee?
I have been taking part in Munzee for over 2 years now.

How did you find Munzee?
A friend Carl (ChastGang) introduced me. I remember saying to him, “It’s just scanning things on the back on something. What’s the point of that?” Lol.

From the very start, I have always been very start, I have been very fortunate to be in good clans. I started a team, East Midlands, and was with them for over a year. Then, I decided to just go to different clans that needed a player for a month or so. I was also in longStarSix Shooters for a few months and really enjoyed my time with them. I have made many good friends. I’ve settled back into another good clan Smart Pants, now, with the friend that introduced me to the game.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?

  1. Finding new areas that I would normally never visit.
  2. Meeting up with people again from past events and having a drink with them.
  3. Chasing the new badges that come out.
  4. Watching people walk back and look at what we are up to, looking confused. I’ve even seen someone back into another car whilst looking at what I’ve been doing.

What is on your wish list?

  1. 5000 Deploy badge would be nice.
  2. To get the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Clan badges

Tell us about yourself!
I’m 46 years old and married with an adopted daughter of 25, but she acts more like 16 years old lol

For my job, I’m a field support engineer for ZF services, so I get to travel to car plants all over, both in and out of country.

Other hobbies include:
My two hobbies fall hand in hand with Munzee; I love running and photography. So now, I run, take pics, and do a bit on Munzee along the way. It’s a good excuse to run for a few munzees then run back.

I’m also very fortunate to be able to travel a lot through my job, and personally with my wonderful wife as I just live for my holidays. So I get to run, take photos, and Munzee all over the world.

Any last words?
I would have to say a big thank you to my wonderful wife for putting up with my running and munzeeing. Also, a big thank you to JW Kern for a very surprised nomination. And, of course, a big thank you to all the people at MHQ for all of their hard work.

Always end in a song.

National Breast Cancer Foundation Donation

If you missed our social posts this morning, the staff at MHQ traveled down the road to Frisco, Texas to present the donation from our Breast Cancer Awareness special to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on behalf of Munzee players worldwide. Thanks to your generosity and giving, we were able to present the NBCF a check for $36,000!

nbcf

Following the presentation, we were able to speak with employees, many of whom work directly with those affected by breast cancer. From prevention to post-diagnosis assistance, donations, such as the one we made because of you, affect many peoples’ lives. Thank you for allowing us to make such a generous donation on your behalf.

We encourage everyone to learn more about the NBCF and what they do. You can visit their website, follow them on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) with #HelpingWomenNow, and even download their free ebook, What Every Woman Needs to Know, to become educated and informed.

Once again, thank you so much. We say it often, but we couldn’t be more proud of our community.
