Player of the Week: Myra Morgan (MyraTX)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Myra Morgan (MyraTX).

Who are you?
Myra Morgan – username: MyraTX

Where in the world do you live?
In a suburb of Denver, CO (but guaranteed to retire back in TX).

How long have you played Munzee?
I joined in July 2013 because a friend was playing (in Texas) but was a bit bored playing all by myself. Then one day about a year ago, I ran into another Colorado players in a parking lot (cgund) and it became a lot more social.

How did you find Munzee?
Through a friend – denali0407 (in TX, of course!).

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
The social aspect of it, and being outdoors. I dislike parking lot capping but love to get out in the parks and trails.

What is on your wish list?
A Jack-a-lope mythological. OH, and MORE TIME to PLAY!

Tell us about yourself!
I’m married to an Air Force pilot (R) who gave me the ride of my life (literally, the first time he took me up in a small plane, I knew we were going to die) and throughout his career and all our traveling. We have three grown and (of course) amazing children. I work as a nanny for a family with a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old (read that as – I filled up my empty nest once my kids were grown and gone).

Other hobbies include:
Gardening, reading, hiking, watching movies, and gathering friends at the house for events.

Any last words?
As many of you who were able to come to the Birthday Bash this past July know, Colorado is a beautiful place to play the game, and there are a lot of nice people doing so. The best part of Munzee for me has been getting to know them; so thanks for that, and see you at the next event!

Introducing the Places Munzees!

As you may have seen across various channels, we’ve teased some new types of munzees during the past week. Well now, they’ve officially arrived. We’re very happy to introduce the Places Munzees!

The Places Munzees are positioned at locations that may be of interest all around the world. The first two categories of Places to be released are Airports and Sporting Arenas:

The Airport Places Munzees have been placed at some of the largest airports in the world as well as airports in areas with large or growing player presence. More airports will be added as we move forward.

The Sports Places Munzees have been placed at stadiums of major sporting leagues around the world, including soccer (football), hockey, and rugby. These will be expanded to more sports and stadiums in the future.

Details

Places Munzees can be captured once per MHQ day. You do not have to wait 24 hours before you can re-cap it, e.g. you can capture it at 11:30 MHQ time on Monday and 9:21 MHQ time on Tuesday. Each capture of a Places Munzee will earn you 10 points.

Places Munzees are NOT blastable. They do, however, have different capture radiuses. Sports Places Munzees have a capture radius of 1000 feet. Airport Places Munzees have a capture radius of 1 mile.

Badges

There are 3 badges for capping Places Munzees: Passport, Customs Stamp, and World Traveler. These are for capping 1, 25, and 100 UNIQUE Places Munzees, respectively.

We will continue to add new categories of Places in the future. The next two categories will be Universities and Aquariums, which will be released in January. More information regarding those categories will be available closer to release- so stay tuned!

We hope you enjoy these new munzees.

Have fun, and Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Feikjen Bongers (feikjen)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Feikjen Bongers (feikjen).

Who are you?

My name is Feikjen Bongers. My player name is feikjen.

Where in the world do you live?
I like in Workum, The Netherlands.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing Munzee on the 23rd of November 2013. We were on vacation and both my son and husband were playing Munzee. I was getting bored, so I thought, whatever, and I opened an account as well. Hell, that was fun, and I still love it.

How did you find Munzee?
My son (at that time 10 years old) came home from a scouting event (sometime in mid-October) telling me and my husband about Munzee. At first, we both thought, ‘oh, another game.’ But, my husband opened an account and started playing. Mind you, at that time there were not many munzees around to cap, so we always had to travel.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Being outside enjoying the weather and the surroundings. Seeing places that you would never see if you wouldn’t chase QR codes. Meeting lots of nice people. So far, we have visited major cities in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and the UK.

What is on your wish list?
Praha, which we are going to visit at the end of this year. And a trip across the Atlantic. Rent a camper and travel through the states and Canada. Visit the local players and chase all of the munzees that we find on our way.

Tell us about yourself!
Well, my name is Feikjen Bongers (feikjen), and I’m married to Maarten Bongers (bordentaxi) since the 29th of February 1992. We have a son, Felix (felixbongers), who was born on the 30th of March 2003. We have had our own restaurant in Workum since 1995, and we have organised at least 8 Munzee events. My husband and I run the restaurant by ourselves. I’m the chef; Maarten is the host. For Munzee, we all have our own accounts, but by the Dutch players, we are know under the name WK-trio. WK is short for Workum, as all the cities around the IJsselmeer have their own historical fishing boats.

Other hobbies include:
I love to cook, read a good book, and Munzee on. And I love to take good car of my men, Felix and Maarten.

Any last words?
I feel very privileged and honoured about being nominated for POTW, and I would like to thank the person/people who did so. Much obliged. Further on, I hope to organise a lot more events in the future with the three of us. Events are always very nice with loads of fun. And we love to travel the world, so we hope to visit many events in the future.

Featured Munzee Toolkit: Frank Broughton (FrankBroughton)

One of the best parts about Munzee is that you can play how you want. Everyone goes about playing a bit differently, and that leads to some very creative and innovative uses of objects. From containers to bags to maintenance, we always encounter something new when we meet players. We want to showcase your Munzee Toolkits to see how you play the game and possibly even inspire other players who may need help. This week’s featured Munzee Toolkit comes from Frank Broughton (FrankBroughton).

What’s in your Munzee Toolkit?

Main 2 bags I use:

Tools in the outer pouches for various uses:

Some extras always with me in the main bag:

The red camera bag contains extra batteries, fully charged in the inner section, and when they need a charge, they go into the outer section of the flap:

Inside the main bag are the goodies — several containers of munzees and Munzee deploy devices (dog tags, treetags):

The littler letters on the side help keep the munzees organized by type, using my super secret coding system. Not pictured are some smaller containers I fill with munzees to carry once outside the car when capping and deploying.

The black bag is for Munzee trips and contains a power inverter and an Anker 30 watt 5 USB 2.1a charger. Great for sharing power with a car load and for charging when at a hotel room:

I have played around with “many” different setups, but I like this one with best and have used it for well over a year now. I take EVERYTHING with me almost everywhere I do. Some people walk into work with a briefcase, I walk in with my Munzee bag (too valuable to leave in the car – I have a ton of Munzee stickers in it. I try to keep a good amount of almost all types.)

If you have a Munzee Toolkit that you’d like to show off, you can email us at iloveyou@munzee.com with the subject “Munzee Toolkit”. Make sure to include:

  • Your username and where you are from.
  • A few high quality photos.
  • A list of what each item is and how you use it.
  • What made you decide to use those items.
  • Any other relevant details.

We want to see your creativity and learn how you play. Show us what you’ve got!

Player of the Week: Gary and Xenia Kemp (EagleDadandXenia)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Gary and Xenia Kemp (EagleDadandXenia).

Who are you?

We are EagleDadandXenia. Gary (Eagle Dad) and Xenia (Xenia).  I am an Eagle Scout and a Father of an Eagle Scout, hence the name.  Xenia is well, Xenia.  Gary’s MUCH better half.  We are members of the Munzee Meatballs Clan.

Where in the world do you live?
A small town called Dade City, Florida, USA.  It is located just Northeast of Tampa.

How long have you played Munzee?
We have been playing since July 22, 2013.

How did you find Munzee?
We were pretty active in another geolocation game (#coexist) and two of our good friends, Ron and Carol (OBC & SLP), started playing Munzee.  We would talk about it and I thought ‘sounds like fun but not sure I want “another” hobby’.  One weekend we were in Orlando coexisting and met them for Dinner.  They invited us to join them while they Munzeed.  That was all it took.  We have trade items for the other game printed with our name and the question, “Hobby or Addiction?”  It certainly is a valid question for our Munzee activity now.  Thank you, Ron and Carol for not giving up on us.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
We enjoy the thrill of the hunt and have become avid Badge collectors.  Far and away, the best part of Munzee is the lifelong friends we have made since we became active.  We have made some special friends from all over the globe to share our addiction with.  We love that Munzee actively participates in the support of the various charities.  We hope that trend continues.

What is on your wish list?
Expand some of the Badge lines, maybe an intermediate Rover Badge to span between 1k and 5k and a 250k Day badge.

Tell us about yourself!
We retired 2 years ago.  Gary was an I/T Project Manager and Xenia worked in the Supervisor of Elections office.  We have 2 grown children and 3 grandchildren.  In addition, we are newly minted GREAT Grandparents.

Other hobbies include:
We enjoy 1800’s living history and we volunteer with a Hot Air Balloon Crew out of Tampa.  Eclectic? Yes……

Any last words?
We are honored and flattered to be nominated for this recognition.  Thank you to those that had a hand in this nomination.  MUNZEE ON!!!!

EagleDadandXenia also included some socials, so cap away!

Munzee Version 3.3.1 for iOS

Our development team is always working to improve Munzee and add new features. We’re proud to announce the release of Munzee 3.3.1 for iOS! This is a minor update that includes:

  • Improved iPad Support: We realize players use a wide variety of devices to play Munzee. Now, the iOS version is a Universal app that no longer runs in compatibility mode on iPads.

  • Minor Improvements and Bug Fixes: This includes fixing duplicate pop-up notifications for new badges and level ups.

The app has been pushed to the Apple App Store. If you don’t currently see an update, please be patient. There may be a delay in propagation to your area, but it is on the way! We hope you enjoy this new update!

Scheduled Maintenance – Monday, December 12th

On Monday (December 12th) at 10:00 MHQ time, we will be switching the Munzee API over to a new server. This, like the website, is being moved to a new server with improved infrastructure and the ability to scale. While there should be no interruptions or down time, we want to you to be aware of this change. We will post on the Announcements page when the move begins and ends as well as if there are any known issues.

Thank you for understanding.

We’re back this year with our Dodgy Jumper Competitions, and they’ve been great so far! Below are winners from events that hosts chose or players voted on. (We may also add some honorable mentions, such as hosts who couldn’t win.) We’ll be updating the gallery as more events happen!

What’s in your Munzee Toolkit?

First up, it’s my folder for holding munzees. Its just two pieces of thick plastic taped together with a rubber band across the edges. Stickers are on a sheet, so peeling them off is easier.

folder

Second are extra batteries; can’t go out without them.

battery
Third is my friend, the Swiss Arms knife. For whatever comes in my way.

knife
Fourth is a waterproof bag for my phone.  Be sure to put the phone in before everything gets wet.

bag
Fifth are the extras for when I meet other hunters. My Personal Munzee and a travelbug.

extras
Sixth are the tools: a spherical mirror for looking under benches and tight spots (even capturing a sticker at an impossible angle is no longer a problem) and a selfiestick makes way up high back in reach.

Last are the cables and a marker. Just dotting the i’s on this list.
