Player of the Week: Carol VandenBrock (Jafo43)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Carol VandenBrock (Jafo43).

Who are you?

Hi, I’m Carol VandenBrock, and my player name is Jafo43. That comes from an old movie called Blue Thunder and my love of Richard Petty. January 2017 was the first month of Sunshine State clan and it is local to me, so I switched clans so I could Munzee with local clan members. Before that, I was in the Munzee Meatballs clan. They are also all my friends, and I have met almost all past and present members.

Where in the world do you live?
I’m originally from the Camden/Lincolnville area in Maine, but I’ve lived in Brandon, FL, USA since 1977. Brandon is in the Munzee Belt which goes from the west coast of Florida, through central Florida to the east coast of Florida. We have become part of Munzee destination trips.

How long have you played Munzee?
My husband, Mike, and I started playing in mid-January 2013.

How did you find Munzee?
We both retired on October 11, 2012 and started to take daily walks. One day, we saw a tag hanging in a tree, and it was one of the original game pieces (which I miss). We looked it up when we go home and decided to give it a try. We were once concerned we would run out of munzees to capture, and now, the concern is where else around here can we deploy and if I will ever clear the map.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?

I like to munzee with my friends. I like the exercise and meeting new people and friends at events and while traveling. Also, I really like Eventzee!!

What is on your wish list?
I wish Munzee would expand the greenie deploy badge line; that’s a big gap from 1000 deploys to 5000. Maybe add one for 2000, 3000, and 4000 deploys. I’d also like to see the fitness badge line expand to encourage people to get out and exercise. I’d like to see lifetime miles badges for 250, 500, 1500, 2500, and add 20K day badge. Also, maybe include the miles and metric equivalent under each badge.

Tell us about yourself!
I married my soulmate, Mike VandenBrock, in 1980 right out of HS. I’ve worked several jobs, but my last job was working at a hot dip galvanizing play for 31 years as a customer coordinator doing quotes, etc. We were happily married for 35 years and retired for 3 years until I lost my hubby in October of 2015. He died from pneumonia and multiple myeloma. I was, and still am, devastated by his loss. My munzee friends were there for me in many, many ways. I am thankful for all of them for their support, sympathy, and friendships. We started playing Munzee together as Jafo43. Then, the Munzee Meatballs clan we were in was in need of another player, so I started playing as Jafo44. After Mike dies, I went back to our original account to play.

Other hobbies include:
Who has time for other hobbies? You should see my reading backlog!!

Any last words?
Yes, I would like to thank those who nominated me. I am honored, excited, proud, and downright tickled pink!!!

Jafo43 also included some socials, so cap away!

Introducing the Earth Mystery Munzee!

You’ve all played with Fire and been frozen by Ice, but now it’s time to clean up with the new Earth Mystery Munzee!

This new physical Munzee type is much like its elemental counterparts, but don’t expect it to scatter every time you cap an Earth Mystery! While Fire left you burned and Ice frozen solid, the Earth Munzee is all about Going Green. When you capture an Earth Munzee all munzees that haven’t been capped in over a year will turn into a Recycle Munzee for two hours- but only for you to see.

Name: Earth Mystery Munzee
Points:
Deploy: 50
Cap/CapOn: Split of 60 with min of 5.

Availability

Earth Mystery Munzees are available NOW in the Munzee Online Store. They are physical stickers sold in blocks of 20 for $40 USD. There is currently a limit of 100 per person, per month.

We’re also excited to announce the Elemental Munzee Pak which will include 10 Fire, Ice and Earth Mystery Munzees for $40. You can also find these in the Munzee Online Store.

Speaking of the Fire and Ice Mystery Munzees, the Yetis and Dragons heard your cries and thought to bring you a nice surprise. Fire and Ice Mysteries now have an increased chance of attracting Dragons and Yetis, respectively!

Be on the lookout for Earth shattering badges to be released soon!

Have fun, and #MunzEE on! #E1EW

Coinz Of The Month- February UPDATE

The next LOVELY Coinz Of The Month set will go on sale Thursday, February 16th 2017 at 15:00 MHQ Time!

February’s Coinz are a throwback Candy Heart special and the Muscle Car Evolution Munzee!

Since the first COTM Club last month we have been trying to figure out how to fairly and easily expand the size of this program to more players. We have been quite surprised at how quickly Munzee Coinz have continued to sell, but we worry that reserving our very limited stock to the same players each month isn’t the best way to grow the Coinz program. Because of this we have reengineered how the COTM Club works to better fit our players’ needs. For starters, it won’t be a club.

For the foreseeable future, all Coinz Of The Month coinz will be released to the Munzee Online store as opposed to our MunzPak site. The price will remain $15 for a set of two unique coinz, but these packs will be sold on a first come first served basis. NOTE that this means buying the Coinz of The Month coinz one month will not guarantee you get coinz the following month. We hope that this will allow players to acquire these products in the most fair way possible.

Players who did sign up for the first COTM subscription will not see any recurring charges moving forward, but you will have to purchase the next set of coinz like everyone else. An updated version of the COTM badge will still be awarded to whoever is able to purchase those coinz each month, but only for the specified COTM coinz.

Thank you for your patience as we work out the kinks to this new program and we apologize for the issues regarding this release. We take our players’ input very seriously and it helps us moving forward. We’ve got some awesome coin designs coming in both the COTM sets and regular sales, so be on the lookout each month!

You can find all Munzee Coinz for sales in the online store collection HERE.

Player of the Week: Jacques Couillard (JacquesC)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Jacques Couillard (JacquesC).

Who are you?

My name is Jacques Couillard therefore my username is JacquesC.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in the suburb of Quebec City in Canada.

How long have you played Munzee?
I registered for Munzee in September 2011, but I have been much more active since June 2014.

How did you find Munzee?
It was on a caching forum that I heard about Munzee for the first time, and I was immediately excited by the game: find, scan, and go to the next. As at the time I did not have a smart phone, I have to wait some time before actively playing. Today, I am not longer separated from my smart phone and Munzee.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Munzee makes me move and get out of my house. If I am passing through a place, I usually make sure to find at least one munzee or leave my trace by deploying one of the small square codes in my possession.

What is on your wish list?
I would like there to be more active players in the area near my home to bring more diversity into the game.

Tell us about yourself!
I am a computer analyst. My wife and I have a pretty 10-year-old girl. She sometimes accompanies me on my ride and tries to find the little square codes before me which she does quite well. I walk a lot, run on occasion, and cycle very regularly. In the roughly nine months that I have used an activity tracker daily, I have lost about 35 pounds.

Other hobbies include:
During the holidays, we regularly camp in our Westfalia. Like many people of my generation, I play video games. I do electronic experimentation using microcontrollers: Arduino, Raspberry, and others.

Any last words?
I sincerely thank the entire team of Munzee, and I encourage them to continue the good work to maintain, diversify, and increase this great game.

Valentine’s Day 2017 Special!

It’s February, and love is in the air. With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, many people are scrambling to make sure they get the right gift for their loved ones. Whether you have a valentine or not, though, you should always get a little something for yourself. We’re here to help with our Valentine’s Day 2017 Special!

From tomorrow (February 10th) at 00:01 MHQ time until February 19th at 23:59 MHQ time, 2017 boxes of chocolate will be on the map. These icons will bounce on greenies every six hours or when capped. When captured, three pieces of chocolate will scatter within a mile radius: Coconut Chocolate, Cherry Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate. These scattered chocolates will expire two hours after they appear or after capture, whichever comes first.

Points

Each icon will reward different points:

Box of Chocolate
Capture: 14
CapOn (for host owner): 14

Coconut Chocolate
Capture/CapOn: Split of 15 with a minimum of 5 (i.e.: 10 for capper and 5 for host owner, 5 for capper and 10 for host owner)

Cherry Chocolate
Capture/CapOn: Split of 25 with a minimum of 5 (i.e.: 15 for capper and 10 for host owner, 5 for capper and 20 for host owner)

Dark Chocolate
Capture/CapOn: Split of 35 with a minimum of 5 (i.e.: 10 for capper and 25 for host owner, 30 for capper and 5 for host owner)

Badges

There are two badges that can be earned during this special: Valentine’s Day 2017 and Chocoholic.

The Valentine’s Day 2017 badge is earned by capturing the Box of Chocolate icon or any of the scattered chocolates. The Chocoholic icon is earned by capturing all three types of chocolate icons.

Be our valentine?

Scatter Munzee Badge Line

Scatter Munzees can send you every which way to cap their offshoots. Munzee player “Snarf” suggested an awesome new badge line to show just how dedicated our players are to capping Scatter Munzees. We were happy to take their idea and run with it!

With that, we’re proud to announce the mind-bending Scatter Capture badge line!

The Scatter Capture badge line includes three badges: “Scatter Brained!”, “View Askew!”, and “Helter Skelter!” for capping 5, 50, and 100 Scatter Munzees, respectively.

The Scatter Capture badges will begin awarding TOMORROW (February 9th). These badges ARE retroactive.

NOTE: These badges are only for capping the original Scatter Munzee, not the ScatterED munzees. Keep an eye out for other lines that may be coming very soon. 😉

We hope you enjoy these badges!

Have fun and Munzee on!

Featured Munzee Toolkit: Jon Rohde (ROHDEJ)

One of the best parts about Munzee is that you can play how you want. Everyone goes about playing a bit differently, and that leads to some very creative and innovative uses of objects. From containers to bags to maintenance, we always encounter something new when we meet players. We want to showcase your Munzee Toolkits to see how you play the game and possibly even inspire other players who may need help. This week’s featured Munzee Toolkit comes from Jon Rohde (ROHDEJ).

Username
My name is Jon Rohde or username ROHDEJ.

What’s in your Munzee Toolkit?

Here is my toolkit:

  1. My DIY munzees.
  2. My generics, purchased on a clearance sale and prizes from local events.
  3. A tin to keep my munzees in.
  4. A portable USB charger with a flashlight. It is just large enough to keep me going for another hour or so..
  5. A 6-foot micro USB cable. I keep the battery in my pocket to keep my hands more free. I have seen a lot of people try to use the 1-foot cords and hold the battery and phone in the same hand, but that gets messy when you are trying to deploy, juggling the phone/battery, and peeling a sticker.
  6. My DIY tote lid tree tags. I have build instructions on the Minnesota Munzers Facebook group.
  7. UV rated zip ties. The little party color ones break down and crack in the weather.
  8. Sheets of vinyl sticker paper from “Label Outfitters”. Did you know that you can print munzees on the go? It is possible to use only your cell phone to create a batch print, save as a PDF, and take it to your local library/office supply store/etc to have them printed for a nominal (usually < $0.50/sheet).
  9. A pair of scissors. You’re out and about with still warm munzees, and you need to separate them somehow.
  10. My Facebook account with the Minnesota Munzers group. I love the notifications from the group that the bike path on the bridge is now open. Or I’m stuck and can’t get out, but I only need 500 points to reach my level in the Clan War. We do what we can to help each other out. And all of the cool pictures – spiders, wasp nests, and sunsets! It’s great to be able to trade tips and tricks with faces I’ve met.
  11. A pair of cleats. The weather is changing up here in Minne-snow-ta. It’s getting dark and the white stuff will be here soon. We have an annual game of who can stay vertical the longest in the snow and ice. I like to win that one.

What is missing from my kit:

  1. I think it would be a good idea to have a cell phone lanyard like some of us use for work ID badges and keys or a leash. I have met a munzer or two that have lost their phone in the water or cracked a screen.
  2. A portable Munzee printer like one of those Brother label makers for repairing munzees. This one is pie in the sky, I know. The new label printers do print QR codes, so we are not far from a solution.

Thanks for the game. I love you, Munzee!

If you haven’t already, look us up @ Minnesota Munzers on Facebook.
