April POTM Recognizes Top Munzee Hosts!

We asked, you answered! Our April Player(s) of the Month criteria called for players to nominate the “host with the most” for the chance to earn the POTM title. While our past POTM have seen a wide berth of players awarded for their Munzee contributions, we decided to narrow down our April POTM finalists to include players with the most votes. However, we’d like to make it clear that many hosts and cohosts were nominated, and we appreciate all players who take the time and effort to host Munzee events and bring players together. With nearly 200 nominations, it’s clear that many players feel the exact same way!

Of course we needed our Global Events Manager Louise to help weigh in on the many nominations. Congratulations to the following players who were both nominated and hand-selected by Louise to be the April Players of the Month:

Remember, anyone who earned the Player Of The Week badge previously IS able to earn the Player Of The Month badge as well! Each month we announce a different set of criteria to award some of the many players who make Munzee so great. Stay tuned for our May POTM criteria announcement! Who knows, you might just be a winner. ?

What was the best Munzee event you ever attended? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! Thanks to all who sent us their nominations, and a big thank you to each and every one of you who have hosted or co-hosted an event. And if you’re looking for the chance to get together with a bunch of players and earn some extra points, remember Munzee’s birthday is on the horizon! And it’s not a birthday without a party! ?

Congratulations, and Munzee on!

March GOTM Winners Revealed!

Our Garden of the Month nominations have been steadily streaming in since we announced the start of the program earlier this year, as our February GOTM nominations allowed us to award two more players for their Virtual Garden organizing skills. February GOTM Winners! Featuring Community Stories

Last month we were happy to announce our first ever Garden(s) of the Month winners. We also had the pleasure of recognizing an additional 35 players as Players of the Month for their Virtual Garden buildings skills, as it was our January POTM criteria. This left us with lots of excellent choices to pick from for our February GOTM!

This recognition is meant to honor a variety of our outstanding Virtual Garden builders who have helped to create some of our most memorable gardens. As many of you might recall, GOTM is an extra special award, because all players who deployed in the winning gardens will receive badges as well! Our winning February Virtual Gardens are the Richard Petty Garden, organized by markcase, and the Greer Train Garden, organized by Dlovegrove!

The February Gardens of the Month appear as follows:

The Richard Petty Garden organized by markcase in Greensboro, North Carolina

The Greer Train Garden organized by Dlovegrove in Greer, South Carolina.

All players who deployed in these respective winning gardens will receive the following special badges!

Player Stories

Not only did we enjoy the design and execution of these gardens, but we also selected this month’s winners based off the stories behind the Virtual Gardens. Munzee is a social game, and we love hearing about how gameplay impacts the community in positive ways!

Richard Petty Garden

The Richard Petty Garden earns the distinction of being one of the oldest Munzee Virtual Gardens in North Carolina. It also earns some major bonus points for being blessed by former NASCAR Driver Richard Petty himself!

Mark Case has been a dedicated Munzee player for rounding seven years, a period of which he has spent designing gardens for a variety of players. According to Case, several years ago he received permission to place a geocache on the property of Petty Enterprise. However, he was later asked to remove it due to property violations from overeager players. Case decided that a Munzee Virtual Garden would be the perfect way to honor Petty without disrupting his land.

With Petty’s permission, Case was permitted by Petty Enterprises to use the “43” logo modeled in the garden. With assistance from Craig Williams, Case was able to finish the coding needed to get the garden structured. On January 12, 2016, the Richard Petty Garden was successfully filled in thanks to player contributions. Case currently keeps a lookout for player holes caused by inactivity in order to preserve the garden. He is happy to share that Petty has officially blessed his titular garden, and the two have met in person!

Munzee player and February GOTM winner Mark Case (left) meets former NASCAR driver and voice actor Richard Petty, who he designed a Virtual Garden in honor of.

Greer Train Garden

Our second February GOTM win goes to David Lovegrove, who did the tricky work of putting the spreadsheets together for the Greer Train Garden. This set of mini-gardens runs on the real world Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. The master plan for the design was devised by David’s 12-year-old son, Jonathan, and his best friend Henry. These creative young men also came up with their own logo design for the Virtual Garden.

The group’s first Garden in the Greenville area was the Clemson Tiger Paw. However, as the Garden neared completion, the boys begged David to make a garden for Greer, South Carolina where they were concentrating their growth efforts. David desired to design a manageable size so that it could be more easily filled in. The team came up with the perfect solution: a train garden, where everyone fills up the engine one car at a time! The boys designed a logo and brainstormed ideas for the train garden at school every day as they strove to bring their dreams to fruition.

The young friends came up with the master plan for the Garden, while David worked the technicalities of their vision. The idea behind the design was to fill up the locomotive design and tender before adding on cars one-by-one. This layout allows for continual expansion, while allowing the Garden to appear “finished” even as it continues to grow!

This isn’t the only time David has joined forces with his son in relations to Munzee. The father and son duo enjoy collaborating on fun and funny designs, such as “Skunky” based off of Jonathan’s favorite stuffed animal. Now 14-years-old, Jonathan has discovered his passion and possible career route through his love of Munzee.

Jonathan has a huge desire to “Grow Greer,” his local community, in Munzee. This passion led him to researching websites about the city, cementing his lasting love for Greer. This resulted in the mayor of Greer presenting him with a key to the city. Jonathan has built a small media empire centered around positive things about and happenings in Greer via Facebook, Instagram, and  www.GreerTidbits.com. He even gives tours!

Jonathan Lovegrove, a young Munzee enthusiast. Lovegrove focuses on building the game in his hometown of Greer, South Carolina and spreading positivity.

Player of the Week: Becky Forsythe (rgforsythe)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Becky Forsythe (rgforsythe).

Who are you?
My player name is rgforsythe. My real name is Becky Forsythe.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Battle Ground, Washington USA.

How long have you played Munzee?
My sister downloaded the app on my phone in January 2013 because she was playing, but he phone went dead. In the process, she made me an account, but I didn’t start playing for nearly two years. I stated playing January 13, 2015. I think my cap streak goes from that day, also. I get hooked so easily.

How did you find Munzee?
I injured my Achilles tendon and couldn’t do anything but sit around, so I started cleaning up my phone and saw the app that my sister had downloaded nearly two years earlier. I opened it and started capping things. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, and of course it was on my sister and brother-in-law’s account, so I immediately got them banned for playing on two devices that were 4,000 miles apart. Once we got everything straightened out, I started to play. It took a long time for my leg to heal, so walking short distances to cap was a perfect recovery and gave me a reward when I actually found a munzee to cap. It is much better now.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I like hand capping because that way I continue to walk with purpose. If I have time, I will even hand cap a virtual garden just because I like to. Other things I like a whole lot are the new people I have met from around the world and the good times I spend with family and friends on Munzee expeditions. I recently got to attend a Go Green Event in Budapest, Hungary. Everyone there was so great, and it really didn’t matter that I didn’t speak an Hungarian. Players helped anyway they could — some by pointing, other by speaking English to us. I also like that the game moves at a god pace and that it keeps changing and growing.

What is on your wish list?
I would like to see a way to help long-time players feel like they can still play in Clan Wars without traveling. It seems like more and more I hear long time players concerned about cap points because they have capped everything within 20 miles of their home. This month (April 2018) is great because of all of the recycles. And as long as I am wishing, I would also like to see an Emerald Garden in Delta Park, Portland, Oregon.

Tell us about yourself!
My husband (amadoreugen) and I play Munzee together. We are both very competitive people, so this has been a friendly source of rivalry for us both. We also love to travel and are fortunate to have played in over 25 countries. We have a lifestyle of long distance walking and have documented more distance than the distance around the world at the equator. We particularly enjoy one of our personal goals: to walk all of the National Trails of Great Britain. I think we have completed 8 so far, so we might run out of energy before we get done.

Other Hobbies Include:
Besides my love for walking, I love glass and beads. I have a tiny lampwork studio that doubles as a work shop for other jewelry component making, particularly glass fusing and metal work that I sell to local jewelry makers. Nothing valuable, but a nice creative outlet for me.

I own a small business selling ceramic beads that are imported from Kenya. This supports a project that was started by an amazing woman 40 years ago to provide salaried employment for women in Nairobi so they do not need to live in the slums any longer. The beads are beautiful, and I usually sell them at trade shows, but as any business person knows, I am always willing to sell to anyone at any time. I make custom jewelry orders for customers out of these beads too.

Any last words?
I want to thank the person who nominated me as Player of the Week and also all of the players for continuing to cap my deploys. I also want to thank the hard workers at MHQ for everything they do to make my day a little happier and a lot more fun. Please keep up the good work; you are all such creative thinkers. Jibby!

Player of the Week: Claudia Patterson (geomsp)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Claudia Patterson (geomsp).

Who are you?
Claudia Patterson, aka geomsp.

Where in the world do you live?
Largo, Florida

How long have you played Munzee?
I downloaded the app on May 24, 2012 and over the next couple years dabbled in the game. I became obsessed in 2014!

How did you find Munzee?
I saw a tree hanger hanging from a tree, and as they say, the rest is history.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I LOVE the people! I have met so many terrific new friends through this game. Most everyone is super friendly. I love heading out in the morning and discovering where I end up at the end of the day. I especially love that you can play the game your way. While we were younger, we enjoyed the physical munzees, but now it seems the majority of the captures are virtuals. It still takes us to some wonderful new places. Events are a plus!! So much fun!

What is on your wish list?
I would love to be in the top 100 players! I have been as close as 111, but I can’t seem to break into this elusive group.

Tell us about yourself!
My husband (geopepi) and I live in Largo, FL, and we munzee together. I took early retirement in 2008 so I would have time to munzee.

Any last words?
Keep up the good work! I love the new munzees that are introduced. Keep them coming! A special thanks to whoever nominated me. What an honor.

Player of the Week: Ron Anderson (GrandpaArvada)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Ron Anderson (GrandpaArvada).

Who are you?
Most people know me as Ron Anderson. Many of my friends in Texas know me an tamiuron. For nineteen years in Texas, I worked at a university with the initials TAMIU. In Colorado, my identity is more about being a grandpa.

Where in the world do you live?
Now retired, we moved to Arvada, Colorado just outside of Denver two years ago.

How long have you played Munzee?
I signed up for my Munzee account on May 29, 2017, so I am still in my rookie year, learning something new almost every day.

How did you find Munzee?
SCHMITZFAMILY4 introduced me to Munzee in Corpus Christi when Munzee was new, but I was not ready yet. memfis mafia introduced me to Munzee here in Colorado, and I was hooked immediately.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
The other players are great! Locally cgund, Rookies2001, and MeanderingMonkeys got me off to a good start. war1man, rosieree, and hunniees in Florida have been a great encouragement. Being retired, I am addicted to ZeeOps, and I have a hard time waiting for the next Clan War to start. I especially love the events and meeting other Munzers. My typical day is to leave the house by 5:00 a.m., chase mythologicals for two hours, spend the next two hours capturing and deploying physicals when the weather is not too cold, and then capture a few mythologicals on the way home. Once a month I like to travel to events and virtual gardens outside of Colorado.

What is on your wish list?
I wish that I could capture Nomads sitting on the munzees I deploy.

I wish that the Ultra Ops were less expensive. When I do the cost/reward analysis between three Mega Ops and two Ultra Ops, the Mega Ops win every time.

It would be nice if there were badges for capturing 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 25,000 greenies.

Tell us about yourself!
I was born in Minnesota, grew up in California, worked 17 years in the Amazon region of Peru, and worked 19 years in Laredo, Texas as a teacher education professor. I met my wife when we both worked at Disneyland fifty years ago. We have two children who were born in Peru, and have two teenage grandsons here in Colorado. I am not one to sit and read or watch television when I can be outside looking for something. As a boy I rode my bicycle along the then rural roads of southern California looking for discarded pop bottles that I could redeem for cash. Now I drive and walk to find munzees for points.

Other hobbies include:
Grandchildren and volunteer work.

Any last words?
It is a great honor to be nominated as Player of the Week. Now I want to help grow the game and give encouragement to other players. The Munzee messaging feature and the various Facebook groups really help to keep players connected.

Player(s) of the Week: Karin LeBlanc and Heather Bailey (GoofyButterfly)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is a duo that plays together, Karin LeBlanc and Heather Bailey (GoofyButterfly).

Who are you?
Our names are Karin LeBlanc and Heather Bailey. We are GoofyButterfly. Heather is Goofy and Karin is Butterfly. Our team name was formed back when we started caching. Heather’s nickname as a child was Goofy, and Karin loves Butterflies, so we put the two things together and made a team name. It was a quick put together name to try a game we thought we had little interest in, but our daughter was harassing us to try it out. So we created the name, and that is what we have been ever since.

Where in the world do you live?
We now live in Punta Gorda, Florida. Karin is originally from Calgary, AB Canada and has lived in Florida for 15 years. I am originally from IL and have now lived in Florida for 18 years.

How long have you played Munzee?
We captured our first munzee on June 8, 2014.

How did you find Munzee?
Well, Heather was sitting reading a blog one day, and Munzee was mentioned. After being addicted to caching for years, we looked up Munzee to see what it was all about. It looked like something we might be interested in, so we loaded the app on the phone. Off we went to try it out. There were 26 munzees in our little town, and we found 22 of the 26 that afternoon. The other 4 we weren’t able to find and later came to understand that they were just missing. That was our first day, and we haven’t stopped since.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
What don’t we enjoy?! Because we play as a team, there are things that we both like and things that aren’t our favorites, but there is nothing to not like about the game. It gets us out in the fresh air, and since we usually Munzee as a family (our mom and our daughter both play), we have great times together. It has taken us to places we would never have gone otherwise. We recently traveled to Georgia for an event and discovered an area that we never would have otherwise gone. We enjoy the events, spending time with old friends and making new ones. We are addicted to badges and icons and truly enjoy searching out as many as we can get. We also enjoy the fact that most of Munzee is urban play which better fits both of our personalities. Munzee makes the world a little smaller and friendlier, and this is one of our greatest pleasures we receive from Munzee.

We also like the challenge. We find someone on the daily leaderboard or the overall leaderboard, and we set our own goals of beating that score or player. We also set monthly goals for what we want to acheive. It is all in fun, and it helps Goofy’s competitive side.

What is on your wish list?

  • Badges for capturing greenies. (Because we are addicted to getting badges as we know many others are as well, this will possible help get people out capping the greens again.) For example, badges for 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000, 50,000, and 100,000.
  • More badges for different types of Munzees. We love that the mystery badges just came out and would like to see more and higher badges like this for each type of Munzee. Again, it will keep folks capping those particular Munzees.
  • A routing feature in the map that will help when traveling. So if we are driving from Florida to Alberta, Canada, which route would be best to pass the most Munzees.
  • Website map filters to be able to filter specific types of Munzees.
  • A feature in the app to show if you have previously captured a Places Munzee.

Tell us about yourself!
We have been married for 4 years. We have two beautiful daughters and 3 amazing granddaughters. We bother work for Emergency Medical Services. Karin works in Patient Financial Services and Heather is a Paramedic and Dispatch Manager. Our mom enjoys Munzee and our Aunt enjoys traveling with us while we Munzee. We recruited our daughter from another game, and now she Munzees with us when we get to visit with her. We live on a small acreage on the West coast of Florida.

We have friends and family all over North America and enjoy traveling to see them. As we said earlier, we are both transplants, so our roots are elsewhere. Our family and animals are our life, and we enjoy each and every day we get to spend together.

Other hobbies include:
Who has time for other hobbies! No, really we work and also have a small farm where we raise goats and dogs. We also have an African Gray Parrot. We enjoy puzzles and travel. Karin enjoys sewing when we slow down from Munzee and life to allow her the time to sew. We both love munzee and can sit for hours just listening to great music. Heather enjoys dabbling in the auction business more for pleasure than for work. Our first favorite hobby is time with our family, then comes Munzee.

Any last words?
We have made some amazing friends and continued friendships through this game, and for that, we are so grateful. We are thankful for what Munzee does for us players and also for our communities. We would like to thank those who nominated us for Player of the Week. Munzee players we have met from around the world are kind and compassionate people, and we are so glad that . this game has brought us together.

Player of the Week: Frank Profitt (munzeeprof)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Frank Profitt (munzeeprof).

Who are you?
I am Frank Profitt; I have several player names depending on the game I play: munzeeprof, WallaBeeprof, geoprof123, and strutprof. As so you can, I love geolocation games. <3

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Georgetown, Kentucky along I75 just north of Lexington.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started on 26 July 2011 🙂

How did you find Munzee?
I heard about Munzee on the GeoGearheads podcast, so I have DarrylW4 to thank for this madness. ;P

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Traveling to big events and meeting other players. 🙂 Also, having the virtuals so that I have something to do on bad weather days. 🙂

What is on your wish list?
I would love to see the historical ones expanded into other states besides Texas, but in a more ordered way. I think a great way to do this would be to us the historical markers that are along the roads. Here in Kentucky, there are over 2500 of these markers in the states, and they are managed by the Kentucky Historical Society which has a detail list of them by county.

Tell us about yourself!
I retired this spring from Toyota where I was a maintenance person for 25 years. I also served in the Navy as an electrician for 6 years and got to go around the world. I was stationed in several states and visited a lot of others. I guess this has fueled my desire to travel and to see what’s around the next corner.

Other hobbies include:
Besides playing geolocation games, I collect Hard Rock Cafe pins and have visited over 50 cafes. I also collect Hot Wheels and attend national events with other local collectors.

Any last words?
I have been building up my area and now have over 600 virtuals surrounding the Toyota plant. You are welcome to drop virtuals in between an of mine and to make a slight detour when you are traveling on I-75 to capture some of them. With GeoWoodstock coming up in Cincinnati this summer, there are sure to be lots of Munzee players coming through here. 🙂 Hope to see many of you at the Munzee events held then and other places. 🙂 Thanks to all the people who nominated me!!

munzeeprof also included some socials, so cap away!
