Letter from the President

rob

STATE OF THE MUNZION.

Munzee President Rob Vardeman looks back on the year, what went right, what went wrong, and what to look forward to next year.

This year has been a tremendous leap forward for Munzee. There are so many new avenues Munzee has explored and so many ways we have expanded, it’s good to look back and evaluate the year.

In 2014, Munzee pushed forward toward our 3rd birthday as a QR-code based scavenger hunt. It has been my first full year at the helm as president, and I’m proud of the new avenues we’ve explored. It all started with opening our first headquarters in a 350 square foot office in Downtown McKinney with 3 employees. We explored the possibilities of working with charitable organizations to do good around the world. My explorations lead to attending events in almost a dozen states, and 3 countries. I started the year with a goal of attending one event each month during the year and was successful, meeting well over 1000 players along the way. This was my favorite part of the year because it is the players who make the game of Munzee continue to thrive. Your personal stories of weight loss, exercise, competition, goals, and family fun are what push me forward to continue evolving Munzee into THE smart phone scavenger hunt app of the future.

2014 was also a banner year for expansion, not only in the game of Munzee, but for Team Munzee and Munzee HeadQuarters. The scavenger hunt numbers expanded in such an amazing way, we needed to break them down in a separate category of this newsletter. We are all amazed at how the game has grown over the course of a year and the steady incline we continue to see. We credit much of that growth to the continued evolution of the game of Munzee and the passion of our players. This year we expanded the ways you can play Munzee. Points, special icons, badges, clan wars, special contests, videos, fitness, socialization, and just for the fun of it. I can’t wait for you to see the lineup of fun we have in store for you during the New Year. More expansion has taken place within Team Munzee this year than I have room to describe. Since opening our first HQ office with 3 employees in January, we now have a total of 8 employees at MHQ with an additional 5 scattered across the world. This growth is directly provided based on your support of Munzee through premium memberships, game piece purchases, and purchases through our authorized resellers. Speaking of our resellers, this year we have added several new locations around the world which can help offer you much quicker shipping than orders coming directly from McKinney, Texas. Check out the resellers at www.munzee.com/retail.

Our largest expansion has come in the form of office space and a completely separate business. The Munzee Marketplace was born to fill a need in Downtown McKinney with local products, grab and go lunches, and of course Munzee products. Players who take the time to visit MHQ are surprised to see what the Munzee Marketplace is, and then enjoy the player hangout area “Behind the Wall”. Tours are offered as long as Munzee staff is on hand, during normal business hours, so please stop by if you are in the area. The Munzee Marketplace has great plans for 2015 as well, but that’s an entirely different subject the people of McKinney and Collin County will be excited to hear!

As we say farewell to 2014 we also recognize some of the growing pains we felt and lessons we learned. It is my personal goal to ensure we continue to prepare for the future players as they continue to join the game. We prepare the servers, the databases, our staff, and innovative ideas to continue to grow the game. It’s with this in mind that we move forward to 2015 with a new theme.

New Year. New Perspective. This is the theme for 2015 so prepare to see it in action often, and quoted on the podcast, videos, and messages online! I am very excited to show players new possibilities for Munzee as we look back on some of our gameplay elements and update them. These updates will allow all of us, and new players we invite, to see Munzee from a new perspective. New elements will be added to Munzee which will give us all the ability to see a new side of Munzee. We will not change the entire game, so don’t fear. However, we’ve heard your requests, we’ve built a team ready to face the challenges, and we’ve started the process toward new growth. We hope you will join us this year in looking at Munzee from a new perspective and helping to grow the map, grow the game, and spread the word. Our first perspective changing addition is the Trail Munzee, set to launch officially in early January. The trail Munzee will be great for creating a longer trail, causing others to visit 5 locations across a wider distance. It’s design is for those seeking adventure, or more than just a casual hop from one sign to the next, 50 feet at a time. We can’t wait to see how you use the Trail Munzee, so get ready. Official details will be released soon!

2014 has been great to Munzee, our player community, and our worldwide community. I can’t wait to walk with you into 2015 and spread the game of Munzee even further. I have a great appreciation for each and every one of you reading this email and what you do to enable Munzee to continue to grow.

Cheers and Munzee On!

2015

Munzee Player of the Week: Christy Lynch (Mrs5daughters)

Munzee has had a big year. As a game, a company and a community, we’re extremely proud of how much our players have accomplished. As we approach 2015, we’re proud to see our players do so much in just 365 days. This week’s Player of The Week has actually done it in less. Christy Lynch (Mrs5Daughters) began Munzee on January 1, 2014 and already she has made a name for herself in Munzee. Read on to learn more about Mrs5Daughters!

251Who are you?
My name is Christy Lynch, my Munzee name is Mrs5daughters since I am the wife of 5daughters

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Tucson, AZ USA

How long have you played Munzee?
350 days

How did you find Munzee?
I heard about Munzee when it was brand new and thought it sounded really fun and easier for me to do on my own than a certain other geo-location game. But since I am a busy mom of 5 beautiful daughters I promptly forgot all about it. Last year when my husband started to get into it…it was either join him or disown him 🙂

-2What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I really enjoy outscoring my husband when we go out for the day. I also like that it keeps us on the move and doing something together as a family.

What is on your wish list?
I think Munzee is a fantastic game and I wish everyone would just remember that and enjoy the game.

-3Tell us about yourself:

I am 43, married to Doug (15 years on the 31st), mom to Amanda, Britney, Victoria, Emma and Kayla, and grandma to James and Julian. When I am not Munzeeing, I work full time at a local elementary school doing attendance and registration. My family and job keep me on my toes and I wouldn’t trade a moment of it.

Other hobbies include:
I love to travel, cook, read, scrapbook and be with my family.

Mrs5Daughters was kind enough to share her social, so cap away!

Munzee Player of the Week: Rusty Padgett (RustyFurnace)

Although we often describe Munzee as an Urban Scavenger Hunt and much of our game is hidden throughout cityscapes, the outdoors hold many Mysteries as well. This is the ultimate draw for this week’s POTW Rusty Padgett (RustyFurnace). The outdoor enthusiast’s first (attempted) capture was at Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains and his love for Munzee has only spread. Learn more about RustyFurnace!

Untitled-5Who are you?
Rusty Padgett and my username is RustyFurnace

Where in the world do you live?
Madisonville, KY USA

How long have you played Munzee?
I captured my first Munzee on June 18, 2012. It was a blue metal tag deployed by kodiak62 and hidden very well. I was so excited when I found it. I got 20 points for that first capture. I was hooked.

How did you find Munzee?
In March of 2012 Jerry Padgett “kodiak62” my long lost cousin introduced me to Munzee at a BSA orienteering competition. I wanted my first capture to be at the top of Clingmans Dome during my backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. When we reached the top I was going to cap my first Munzee. I was disappointed when I had no cell service up there. On July 5th, 2014 I got back to Clingmans Dome. This time I was ready and captured three virtuals.

Untitled-6What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
Getting outdoors, spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy meeting new people and making friends for all over the world. I enjoy all the different ways to play the game. I love that you can tailor it for scouting competitions or church youth events.

What is on your wish list?
Individual competitions and rewards similar to clan wars. I would like to be able to challenge a specific player to a battle.

Tell us about yourself!
I am married and have 2 teenagers. I work in the heating and air conditioning field. I am an admin for the Kentucky Munzee Group on Facebook. I enjoy working with youth, both at church and through scouting. I am an avid outdoorsman. My favorite place to be is in a hammock, relaxing after a long day on the trail.

Other hobbies include:
Backpacking, hammock camping, kayaking, hunting, and fishing.

Rusty was kind enough to share his social, so cap away!

Munzee Player of the Week: David Scarbrough (mobilemachine)

We at Munzee constantly try to evolve the game in new and interesting ways, but it’s the players who truly grow the game in every way, shape and form. Although it has become a staple of the game, virtual gardens were completely thought up and produced by the players. Now virtual gardens are seen far and wide and players from across the world are working together to build these works of art. One such player is David Scarbrough (mobilemachine) and his home of Franklin, Tennessee is a hotspot for virtual gardens and he’s proud of the role he’s played in developing the area. Read on to learn a bit more about this week’s Player of the Week, mobilemachine!

photo (1)Who are you?
My name is David Scarbrough, my username is mobilemachine.

Where in the world do you live?
I am blessed to live in the great city of Franklin, Tennessee.

How long have you played Munzee?
As of today I have been playing Munzee for 402 days.

How did you discover Munzee?
I scanned a Munzee in the Target parking lot close by home out of curiosity and was directed to the download, I have been playing (and loving) the game ever since. I was quickly contacted by Jay and Tammy (thepiedpiper and therealgigi) and asked to join their clan. We have been earning the chuck and super chuck ever since.

photo1What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I really enjoy the diversity in which MHQ operates with respect to the Clan Battles, specials and always changing and creating new munzee types. It’s exciting to see what will happen next and I can’t wait to see what the future brings to this exciting game. I also enjoy having something that my entire family can get out of the house and be active with. We can enjoy our beautiful city and other areas of the country. I would like to thank my beautiful wife and daughter (Goliath63 and Graciemay) for taking the time to participate in my desire to deploy and cap as many Munzees as possible.

What is on your wish list?
My wish list would include a 10 point minimum on Mysteries and also at least a once a month sale on Mysteries and Virtual Mysteries in the Munzee store.

Tell us about yourself!
I am one of the founding farmers of the garden in Franklin, TN. When I first started playing there was a shortage of specials in Franklin and started communicating with Jay and Tammy that we should start our own garden somewhere. I had driven Caruthers so many times and noticed that it would be a great place to start a garden and we all began deploying all the Mysteries we could get our hands on. When the clan wars started offering weapons those too were all added to the garden .I don’t think any of us ever imagined that it would turn into the largest garden in the USA and are still kind of in shock. I would like to thank all of our clan members and all of the other players for deploying and capping in the Franklin garden.

It has been great fun spending weekends and evenings walking the garden together deploying together and having fun. Our clan is more like one big family rather than a bunch of friends, even though some of them live in different parts of the world and the country. That is what I enjoy about the game, it can bring people together in a very special way that no other sport or hobby could do. Thank You MHQ for creating the greatest game in the world and I cant wait to see what the future brings.

What are some of your other hobbies?
Munzee is my only hobby besides loving My family and friends.

Munzee Player of the Week Spotlight: Lachy Gatland

By now, you know Team Munzee loves it when we’re introduced to players that just have that “something” that sparks the love of the game in all of us.  What adds to that spark is when we hear about our younger players, the players introduced to Munzee early, players who’ll carry the game with them as they grow up.  One of those great young players is McChickenNugget, aka Lachy Gatland.  We’re excited to have him as our Player of the Week, on his birthday week!

IMG_7546

Who are you?
McChickenNugget

Where in the world do you live?
Perth, Western Australia

How long have you played Munzee?
One week over a year!

How did you find Munzee?
I found Munzee out when searching Google to see if there were any games for smartphones similar to Geocaching. From then the addiction started! I created an account and thought of one of a really silly name and began the hunt at a local park! 🙂

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I LOVE MUNZEE!!! I love meeting new Munzeers and making new Munzee friends! I also love bumping into Munzeers on field while out capturing and deploying! It is always a great surprise!

What is on your wish list?
Being able to purchase mysteries the same as motels. Reasonably priced, virtual and with a limit you can buy each month to keep and equal playing field.
I can’t wait for when we will be able to host official events! (Editor’s Note: Patience! They’re coming soon!)

Tell us about yourself!
My name is Lachlan Gatland, but prefer to be called Lachy. I am currently 14 years old and born on the 19th of November. (Yes, ironic that the week I turn 15 is the week I have been nominated for player of the week! :D) I am part of a family of four that love traversing the globe!

Other hobbies include; Aviation, aviation photography, sport and finding the occasional Geocache while out Munzee-ing.
I always cycle to Munzees! Well, it is hard to drive a car without a license! 😛 and I love deploying! DEPLOY, DEPLOY, DEPLOY! Grow the map!

1468719_647633578614445_1822183545_n (2)Also thanks to the people who nominated me for the spotlight! 🙂 You are stars and on another note, thanks to everyone for all the support we have got on the Social Munzee Sharing Group on Facebook! When I started the group I was expecting maybe 50 people but we now have 600 members strong and have at least 1000 socials on the group so thank you! 😀

Lachy, we’re so happy to have one of our many great players from “down under” as a featured Player of the Week!  Your energizing Munzee spirit speaks volumes to our community, and it’s only fitting to feature you as our POTW on your Birthday week!  Happy Birthday, and happy Munzee hunting!

Do you know a player that inspires you, or does their part to grow the world of Munzee?  Know a Munzee super-hero, or maybe just someone that makes you smile?  If so, send us a message at iLoveYou@Munzee.com with their name, player name, and your info as well!

Munzee Longsword

sword_256[2]

The Munzee Longsword

Long live the Munzee longsword. Three clans earned the Munzee Longsword after play concluded for September 5, 2013. Clans Cologne, Hummel Hummel, and Menagerie were the first clans and players to receive the longsword.  How did they earn this level three weapon in the current clan battle?  Each clan member accumulated a minimum of 1000 points.  Find more details about the Munzee longsword via our help desk.

What’s Next?

“The Chuck” is the highest level weapon during this clan battle.  It won’t be as simple as just accumulating points to earn this weapon.  Which clan will figure out the right combination to unlock The Chuck first?

September 5, 2013

Why Clan Weapons?

This month we wanted to give everyone a new reason to play!  It’s not all about trying to make it into the Top 3 – sometimes it’s about working together with your friends from around the globe.  That is the design for the clan weapon layout.  The clan weapons will not level the playing field during this battle.  Can we expand this plan in the future?  Yes.  Will we?  Stay tuned!  🙂

Specifically we’ve chosen “weapons” due to the fact that these are called clan “battles” or “wars”.  We hope it gives you a fun new reason to get out and Munzee, with the possibility of earning a limited release Munzee type.
