On Your Mark, Get Set, GO! #WorldBicycleDay Specials!

UPDATE: as of 6/17/21, another latecomer, Tandem Twins, will be out on the map! It is a virtual special, so it will behave exactly like the Toy Trike and Bicentennial Bicycle. We have also extended the capture badge line so there are now 6 badges to earn!

UPDATE: as of 6/10/21, World Bicycle Day specials will now bounce around the map until 23:59 on June 30th. This has also been updated below.

In addition, Fancy Flat Lou will also scatter the Starting Line, Midway, and Finish Line munzees, which will reveal her own version of the random race result icons. Caps of Fancy Flat Lou will NOT count towards the capture badges described below, but caps of her Starting Line, Midway, and Finish Line munzees WILL. We’ve also extended the badge line so now there are 5 badges to earn!

Tomorrow is World Bicycle Day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly due to bicycles’ historical significance and their many benefits as a transportation solution: “simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable.” As our Global Events Director, Louise, can attest, the humble bicycle can be the start of something great, and is definitely worthy of being featured in our app! Starting at 12:00 MHQ on June 2nd, World Bicycle Day specials will bounce around the map until 23:59 MHQ on June 30th.

World Bicycle Day Specials

Riders will be racing in waves, but should reach a total of 1,200 — 300 per bike. They will bounce around on the map every 4 hours or when captured. You can find these speed demons at the following landing pads:

Each bike will be worth 150 points for the Capture and 50 points for the CapOn, so you don’t want to miss out! Champion Choppers and Unicorn Unicycles will be attracted to Physical Magnets, while Toy Trikes and Bicentennial Bicycles will be attracted to Virtual Magnets. To access these specials, please turn on your “All Expiring Specials” and “All Limited Edition Specials” filters.

Racers Ready

These bouncers also have a unique twist to them! When you capture a World Bicycle Day special, a Starting Line Munzee will scatter nearby, similar to a Laser Trail. This means only you (the capper) will see the Starting Line Munzee on the map. Once you start the race you’ll need to find the Midway Munzee scattered nearby, followed by the the Finish Line Munzee! If you find you’re just out of range, you’ll be happy to know that you can use Rover Treats to have Rover fetch them for you!

Additionally, when you capture a Finish Line Munzee, you’ll receive the random race result icon as well! They behave the same way as the Jack In Zee Box icons in that only the Finish Line Munzee will be visible on the map, but the result will be revealed once you capture it. Above is an example of the 1st Place Champion Chopper result! You’ll be able to earn 1st through 3rd Place for all bikes, so keeping racing to earn all 12 results!

Badges

There will be six badges to earn for these specials. They are all based on the total number of World Bicycle Day specials AND scatters you capture, but just how many captures it takes to earn all 5 badges will be kept a secret! Watch for a badge reveal post in the following days!

We hope you’re ready to rock-and-roll with these specials!

Roverhaul Part 3!

Roverhaul Part 1 gave Rover the ability to dig up Jewel Shards while accompanying you on Jewel-capping sessions. Roverhaul Part 2 gave Rover the ability to extend your capture radius with Rover Treats. What does Roverhaul Part 3 have in store? A combination of the two!

Another Trick in Rover’s Toolkit!

When you capture the last stage of a Physical Trail Munzee while a Rover is with you, you have a chance of finding a Rover Treat! In addition, the deployer of the trail will also receive a Rover Treat! After all, the deployer did go to the effort of deploying and maintaining their Trail, which is not an easy feat!

Please note that this is only for Physical Trails. The chance of finding Rover Treats may spread to other types in the future!

The popup that appears after you’ve captured the final stage of a Trail will let you know if Rover has found any, so make sure to keep an eye out! You will also find them on your credits list.

Of course, if you need more Rover Treats, you can pick them up in the In-App Store for 40 Zeds, or get a pack of 10 Rover Treats in the Freeze Tag Store for $3.

As we continue to refine and improve the Munzee app, expect more Rover-related news!

Roverhaul Part 2!

Last month, Rover gained a cool new ability to dig up Jewel Shards while accompanying you on Jewel-capping sessions! We hinted that that was only the first part of Rover’s planned upgrades, so we’re excited to reveal the second part to you now!

Another Trick in Rover’s Toolkit!

When you feed Rover a Rover Treat, your capture radius for virtual scattered munzees* (i.e. Feathers, Gnome Hats, etc.) and Amethysts will be doubled or raised to a minimum of 500 ft for one capture! For example, if the munzee normally requires a capture radius of 300 ft, it will be doubled to 600 ft. And if the munzee normally requires a capture radius of 150 ft, it will be raised to the minimum of 500 ft.

At launch Rover will only help you capture the aforementioned types, however he may be trained to chase other types in the future.

You’ll only see the option to feed Rover a treat if you:

  1. Have a Rover with you AND
  2. Try to capture a virtual scattered munzee or Amethyst that is too far away

This flow should prevent you from wasting Rover Treats, and also ensure that the popup won’t be too disruptive during normal play!

Premium players will receive 1 Rover Treat during this launch! Otherwise, you can pick up Rover Treats in the In-App Store for 40 Zeds, or get a pack of 10 Rover Treats in the Freeze Tag Store for $3.

Rovers Now Available In-App!

If you checked out the In-App Store upon reading the previous paragraph, you most likely noticed another item sitting beside the Rover Treats — that’s right, Rovers are now available in the In-App Store!

As we continue to refine and improve the Munzee app, expect more Rover-related news!

Munzee on!

*Unfortunately, Charge Munzees (scatters that land on another munzee) and MOB scatters (scatters that come from munzees that land on another munzee) are excluded from this, but as stated above, this may change in the future!

Rover Learned a New Trick!

Perhaps you’ve guessed what it is from the badge image above? Now, when you capture a Jewel while a Rover is with you, you have a small chance of receiving Jewel Shards! This includes Jewels captured using Blasts!

The popup that appears after you’ve captured a Jewel will let you know if Rover has dug up any, so make sure to keep an eye out! You will also find them on your credits list.

If you don’t have a Rover with you and there aren’t any nearby for you to pick up, you can purchase one from the store HERE! To learn more about how Rover works visit our Help Guide article HERE!

Top 14 of ’14: The Overall, Best of the Best for this year.

As the year comes to a close we can’t help but look back on how big 2014 was! From special icons and big events, to huge announcements, 2014 is going to be a tough act to follow. Here we have the 14 best things about 2014, ranging all things Munzee. In no particular order Team MHQ has decided on what they think made the year so special.

MHQ Gets an Office!

MHQ may have hit the ground running in 2014, but at the end of 2013 they still didn’t even have an office! So when the 3 (at the time) full time members of the team moved into their new office in McKinney, TX they knew it was a start to a big year. Having a home base (that wasn’t Rob’s living room) solidified their full time role with Munzee and paved the way for the company’s growth. Little did they know that growth would come quicker than expected…

New Hires

While the first office in McKinney was a huge step for Munzee, the 350 square foot space filled up quickly. After hiring Intern+ Matt and a month later UI Designer Peter and Master of Media Dylan, it was time to look at expansion. Even in the final months of the year our team began to grow more with development on both technical and business sides. Munzee will only grow from here- especially considering the growth of the company’s business ventures.

The Munzee Marketplace

What started as a convenience store to provide the downtown McKinney workers with an affordable snack option has grown into something much bigger than anyone at MHQ could have imagined. The Munzee Marketplace is now McKinney’s premier option for local, organic, fresh foods. The Marketplace has partnered with various local vendors and has big plans on the horizon that make Munzee proud.MarketplacEE

MHQBashEmblemMHQ Bash

All the extra space from the Marketplace was handy for MHQ’s first official event. In connection with Downtown McKinney’s Oktoberfest Celebration, MHQ Bash featured three days of activities that nearly 200 people joined us for. After seeing some of the great events our players have thrown over the year, we knew we had to go big. We learned a lot about how to plan and execute events (a learning experience to say the least) and we know next year’s Bash will be even bigger.

GemVirtEmerald128Official Virtual Garden

Speaking of learning experiences, there’s still a lot the players have to teach us. Much like MHQ Bash, players have made their own virtual gardens for a while and needless to say we have been super impressed with what our players have created. So in connection with the emerald family jewel we made our first official virtual garden outside of McKinney and our players helped us fill it in. It took a little maneuvering and some help from our players with our design, but we’re proud of the new garden and excited to release more official gardens around the world.

Rob2_128 (1)The Traveling President

President Rob Vardeman may have done a bit of Virtual Garden scouting during his world travels this year as well. CoachV started his presidency with an oath to expand the player connection and he has not wavered on that promise. For as busy as we keep Rob in the office he still made as many trips to as many events as possible this year. From Germany to California to Canada and everywhere in between, the President racked up the frequent flyer miles, sometimes squeezing trips into a 24 hour span- and enjoyed every minute of it.

Football- More Kicks- Points: 20 split cap & ownerCopa Do Munzo

It’s hard not to enjoy world travels, especially when you’re in Germany days after they won the World Cup. Rob got to experience just this during his trip to Cologne, Germany. To celebrate the world’s favorite sport, Munzee blasted the world with football special icons and held a competition where players could vote on who they thought would win in the Copa Do Munzo competition. As many guessed, Germany won the cup and Rob was on hand to reward the faithful football fans.

Special Icons

Much like the footballs that bounced across the map, this year featured a lot of special icons. From 8-bit ghostzees to non-exploding London dynamite, the unique and eclectic assortment of specials got players out at odd hours and in new places hunting for munzees. This year’s specials not only took the game to different levels, but also gave us an opportunity to do good for others as well…

Charity Fundraising

The benefit of special icons is that they are constantly interchangeable and can be used in unique ways, like helping raise money for charity in a fun way. Our players came out in full force multiple times this year to use Munzee for good. The Autism Puzzle Hearts brought in $5000 for the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation, The RMH Virtuals garnered $25,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Spokane, and the ALS Ice cubes raised $54,000 for Project A.L.S.. Needless to say 2014 was a big year in many ways!

3rd Birthday Celebrations

July 2014 also marked Munzee’s official 3rd Birthday Celebration, or #FiestaThree as we called it. We kicked off the month-long celebration by introducing Ruby Munzees, held various events every third day of the month and even had Pinata special icons that players could smash open. The whole month was a huge celebration and our players even sent in special Happy Birthday pictures and videos for Munzee. Players also took advantage of Rovers in order to get the Birthday Barker badge. Speaking of Rovers…

Rovers

During one of his many trips this year, Rob and other members of Team MHQ announced the arrival of Rovers at Munzee Madness 3 in California. Rover is a supplemental piece to the game, and in fact a game within the game of Munzee. Rover is an extremely unique part of Munzee because although it is not a munzee type it encourages players to travel and expand their personal maps. Since its announcement in March, all the active Rovers in the world have traveled a whopping 61 million miles!RoverCaptured

Clan Wars

Another huge part of this year was the Munzee Clan Wars. Players battled it out month after month, fighting for that number one spot and the ever-glorious Super Chuck. This aspect of the game has shown MHQ how dedicated our players really are and the lengths they are willing to go in the name of Munzee. As we head into the new year we’re sure our players will take the battles to an even higher level and the Clan count will only grow from there!

Podcast/ Videocast

In case you couldn’t tell from our world-traveling President, Munzee is all about transparency and our player relations are extremely important to us. So what better way to interact with our players on a weekly basis than with a podcast? Our weekly update on all things Munzee has evolved a lot over the year. We’ve recently turned our podcast into an interactive videocast that players can now ask us questions each week, which has furthered the connection we get to make with our players. Be sure to join us Tuesdays at 1 pm (MHQ Time) for the live videocast where you can interact with us, ask questions and see us stumble over our words!

videocastEventzee

As big as 2014 was, 2015 is going to be even bigger. Perhaps the biggest announcement of the year was the development of our new app Eventzee! The private events-based app will not only expand the Munzee events system, but will help our business grow to new reaches and in turn grow the Munzee map as well. We’re currently beta-testing the app and fixing any final kinks, but Eventzee will be a huge part of the new year.

10838274_811002748946022_1775251226567516665_o

Thank you to all of our players for a great 2014. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

Happy Birthday Munzee!

Get ready to blow out the candles because it is officially Munzee’s 3rd birthday celebration, or #FiestaThree as we’ve come to call it around the office. As we celebrate our three years of outstanding achievements, we want to give back to the players that continue to give it their all year after year! This July we have a long list of events and announcements planned throughout the month, so be sure to stay tuned as we reveal more in the coming weeks. Remember, “three is a magic number”, so you may want to keep an eye out every three days this month!

We’ll have sales on special items throughout the month, so to start off we’d like to announce sales on the following items for beginning July 1 at 9 AM (MHQT, GMT-5) for 24 hours.

  • $3 Virtuals
  • $3 Socials
  • $3 Rovers

-3Take advantage of those discounted Rovers and get them out of their kennels. You’re going to need them if you want to get your hands on the exclusive Birthday Barker badge this July. You can get the badge in one of three ways:

  1. If you interact with 3 rovers that you do not own
  2. or If a rover you own interacts with 3 unique players
  3. or If a rover you own reaches 33 miles of combined distance throughout the month

GemRuby_128What’s a birthday without presents? We’ll have prize days throughout the month featuring physical, virtual and totally random prizes. Our first prize day is Thursday July 3rd (mid morning MHQ time) where players have a chance to get Blast Caps, Mystery Virtuals and… a SPECIAL NEW MUNZEE type to celebrate our July Birthday. Those who saw the July Clan Requirements may have heard a bit about this new sparkle in coachv’s eye, but check in Thursday morning to learn exactly what the new munzee is.

Of course we’ll have many, many more announcements throughout the month as well. It helps to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and the blog. Stay tuned to hear about a new special following the end of the Copa Do Munzo challenge, triple point days and an all-out worldwide birthday party.

Big stuff is happening, so happy hunting and happy birthday to Munzee!
